is USC going down the "U" road?

Interesting parallels...

2001 Miami wins the BCS 12-0 - 2004 USC wins the BCS 12-0
2002 Miami loses the Championship game 11-1 - 2005 USC loses the Championship game 11-1
2003 Miami loses 3 games - 2006 USC already with 2 losses
2004 Miami loses 3 games .....

Only time will tell.

I don't think so, their recruiting maching has been and continues to be awesome. They have another monster class coming in next year and they are a very young team. I think we all will be stuck with them for awhile. image

Edited to add: the west coasters have done a better job of keeping their kids out of jail, something the FL schools need to study.

I don't see it. USC is simply the marquee destination for the entire west coast. Almost any of the best players who want to stay in the Pacific time zone will go there.

heh, alpe struggling with his thought processes as usual.

The U has a long history of thuggish behavior. USC has none of that. USC lost nearly their entire starting offense, and this year's team will be nearly complete and returning next year.

Don't worry alpeboy, USC will dominate next year.

Between Reggie Bush getting free housing, Leinart maybe doing the same, The backup QB Sanchez getting accoused of rape, they just may be going down that road, they ar not the Squeky clean program of old.

I have seen nothing beyond the wild accusations an over eager yahoo sports reporter made about Bush. Where did the story go? If there was anything to it, wouldn't it have been out by now? Leinart had free housing? Please provide links.

Otherwise, I'll chalk it up to jealous 'fans' who can't handle a west coast powerhouse.

  • Not even close! USC is a much classier program and will be right back in the title hunt next year! Blue chip recruits and the classiest coach in the country at the helm!

Jarrett was cleared by the NCAA and paid back the rent money.

This is hardly the handgun hooliganism that pervades florida college athletics - i.e. the U, or, more specifically, the criminoles at FSU (right lil joey)?

  • axtell and ziggy,

I did not compare USC and Maimi's behavior only the records of the two teams. And the argument of USC is simply the marquee destination for the entire west coast. Almost any of the best players who want to stay in the Pacific time zone will go there is bogus. Prior to 2003 how many times did the Trojans compete for the championship in the lasr 20 years?

So if they are such a recruiting monster and such a destination, what happened in the 80-90s?

If USC loses to Michigan in the bowl game they will have the same record Miami had over three years in 2001-2003 - sorry if the facts are upsetting to you

    alpe-

I think most programs would enjoy having the 'problems' that USC has had over the last 3 years.

Hey, I see you still have the really classy sig line going on.
  • it's not the last 3 years that's the problem knucklehead - it's the pattern

Geez, you are not very smart. I merely am pointing out a parallel between two teams that once were the most dominating teams for a 5 year period. The teams records are interesting.

I can understand why you want to change the subject to my sig line, the future doesn't look to bright for you right - Nostradumba$$?

BTW, why does my sig line bother you, I thought you didn't believe in fairy tales? Is Disney a better destination for you?

    Have a nice night.

How many programs would love to have either of these 2 team's 3 year runs? Hmmm? I would suspect EVERY program.

I am the 'dumbass', yet you are the one who still hasn't figuredout that 'too' is different than 'to'. Right, dumbass?

Doesn't bother me, just shows how you have no class whatsoever. Question, do you consider yourself a christian? If so, is it typical christian behavior to wish someone and their family to eternal damnation?

  • I am the 'dumbass', yet you are the one who still hasn't figuredout that 'too' is different than 'to'. Right, dumbass?

Good point, however I have figured out how to spell "figuredout" Mr. English Major.

    Two points for you:

    1. I am merely pointing out that USC seems to be following the pattern that Miami had 5 years ago. How eerie is that, but since you are not capable of an original thought or observation and ESPN or Jim Rome has not covered this yet you are unable to post anything other than a personal attack on me.

    2. I did not "wish" you to eternal damnation I simply invited you, since you do not believe in Christ, why do you care about the type of Christian I am? And since as covered above you are uncapable of any original thought I am sure I will be getting some type of refurbished lines or more practical a personal attack.

Don't let me down now Axtell, please follow your script.... also feel free to post Jim Rome's opinion when you hear it after USC loses to Michigan and they start talking about USC slide just like Miami's.

    Tata....

    'Uncapable'? You mean 'incapable'?

Why do I care what type of christian you are? Because it shows EXACTLY the type of hypocritical behavior that is the norm: 'do as I say, not as I do!' The very fact you have 'may Axtell and his family rot in hell' in your sig line speaks volumes that you are no christian whatsoever - you are just a loudmouth who wants to tell others how to live their lives.

As far as personal attacks, YOU are the one who continues to refer to me by name in your sig line post, so YOU, sir, are the culprit here.

Now, go crawl back into whatever hole you came from, and never come back.
  • thanks for sticking to the script - no thoughout comebacks just more personal attacks.

so are you and Commie boy the same person or are you twins seperated at birth? Same tactics, same arguments and always forgets the things he/she posted that led to my sig line. And of course not one original thought - just Jim Rome clones!

Let me know when you listen to ESPN radio and have something to post....

This coming from a guy wanting someone and their family to rot in hell is the very definition of hypocrisy.

I've asked this before of supposed 'christians'...didn't christ teach to 'turn the other cheek'? Or are you just a hypocrite who feels people should live how YOU say, while YOU live whatever way you want? Yeah, that's what I thought: the latter.

<< <i>Let me know when you listen to ESPN radio and have something to post.... >>

    /yawn

did you say something? Oh no you didn't?

I get the feeling you weren't hugged much as a child. I guess when you don't know who your parents are, that's going to happen.

    Oh well.
  • So Christians are hypocrite, NY is dirty, Yankees are evil, god is a fairy tale, etc...

You have the world figured out, huh Brian?

I bet you are a 25-27 year old with a community college education (if any), have a job that pays you by the hour and you have to wear a name badge, right?

I bet you still live at home with your mom and a product of the public school system...

You have no ability to think for yourself and all you do is post the same BS everytime, you have no game. I take back the comparison to Commie boy, he at least posts something useful every once in a while.

Wrong again. Own my own home. Went to a private school (christian, actually) where I was force fed religion every single day. I knew from a very early age it was a load of garbage.

I'd like to know which alt ID you are. 311 posts in 5 years screams 'alt'. Perhaps you can be a man and reveal your true identity?

Also since you like to attempt to quote Christ so much, what does Jesus say about people with no faith... pray for them. What does he say when someone will not accept God?

I'll give you hint, please refer to my sig line (albeit paraphrased)

  • USC is slowly declining the same way the U declined, Notre Dame declined, Nebraska, Va Tech..... USC was on top. First the OC/DC leave for other jobs, then Juniors leave early, and the best of recruiting classes dont always pan out. I think USC misses Norm Chow more than most would admit. Josh Booty may be a good quarterback but under Chow he would be great.

ND in the 80s/90s lost B Alverez, Minter, Charley Stong, Mike Trogavic to the pros and College jobs and it took its toll.

Miami had off the field issues but also quiet a few DC and OCs left for greener pastures.

USC has had monster recruiting classes but only one guy can carry the ball at a time. I believe USC had three four star running backs sign with them. Waiting for your turn sounds easy enough, but to a 17 year old who was a star for four years in High School and could start for 90 % of other schools it breeds turmoil which also leads to a decline.

Wow, a Rose Bowl berth and they're in decline? Comical.

Turmoil? Hardly. Would you be saying they're in decline if they beat UCLA and go to the title game? I didn't think so.
  • Decline - 2004 undefeated national champ - 0 losses
2005 lost in Championship game - 1 loss
    2006 Rose bowl - losses

the question was decline - not freeefall if that is not declining albeit slowly what is?

Nd overated in late 80's and early 90's - that is comical - check who ND beat in 1988

Tell me who - Boise st , Wake or Loiusville beat to be in the BCS

Finally they didn't beat UCLA or Oregon State and thats why they are not in the title game
  • Gipper,

Don't debate this bafoon, he will not acknowledge any topic. All he can do is ridicule every post with responses like "comical, absurd, that's stupid, etc" and if all else fails he won't answer the question and then go straight into a personal attack.

I just merely posted an observation (I have no horses in this race as I am a UGA fan) and his first response was an attack. If you see any of his post you will read whatever PTI, Jim Rome or ESPN SportCenter said that day.

Anyway, the USC/Michigan bowl game should be interesting and an insight to whether USC will go the "U" slide or bounce back.

I doubt that the Rose Bowl is that important to the fate of the program. There's a natural ebb and flow to most college programs. It might be later rather than sooner before USC celebrates another championship, but as long as Carroll remains - and it seems to be a great, mutually beneficial fit - I think we'll be very competitive for the forseeable future.

By the way, fitting avatar, alpe.

Unfortunately winning a national championship is how some folks view a program. Its a frigging college not a pro franchise. There are way more important benchmarks than how many national titles you win. Some of you younger folks will realize this and some won't ever. This was brought to mind as I was reading a newspaper article about the 25th anniversary of my High School, an all white school with an enrollment of around 800 with no player over 6'3". This was back in the day before Indiana went to a class system, i.e. every team played for one championship.

The coach Jack Edison, made the comment that even though they won the tourney he was more proud of what these kids had done with their lives in the intervening 25 years. One of the players Phil Wendell won the Mental Attitude Award and another is currently coaching the Chicago Bulls. All of these kids have done well over time.

The true measure of a school is more than a championship, its tradition over time, its what they make of their lives afterwards, its how many kids stay out of trouble and belong there in the first place. These are the things that should make you proud too.
  • Yawie,

I agree - USC probably won't slide as low as Miami has but the three years have been eerie similar. Only time will tell.....

Also unlike Miami, Pete Carroll recruited his players and won with them - Coker inherited a great team that had a chip on their shoulders for not being able to play Oklahoma in 2000 when they beat FSU and with the same records the BCS still let the Noles play for the title.

Lack of recruiting and not developing players led to Miami's slide in USC I think it's just too many guys went pro in one year.

SC has been a storied program for a very long time, not so with Miami and Florida State. I can remember sitting in the stadium in the 70's watching ND demolish Miami 40 something to 13 and hearing the criticism that ND should drop them as they were padding their schedule with cupcakes. Funny how things change.
  • IrishMike,

Actually USC had some crappy years from the mid 80s and on until the arrival of Pete Carroll this decade (including a loss to ND from 1983-1996).

I remember as a kid watching those USC/ND games - my favorite was the '67 game. OJ was awesome that day 3 tds, he was a real Irish killer....

USC definitely sucked when I was there ('92-'96). I really never thought the program would recover and certainly didn't think Carroll would be the one to do it. Now I hope he stays forever - or at least until the NCAA equivalent of dementia sets in (e.g. JoePa, Bobby Bowden).
    imageimageimageimageimageimage
  • I thought that if USC would have beaten Texas last year , P.C would have left for the pros with Bush and Leinart. I think he will stay until he wins a National championship then bolt to the NFL.

As a USC fan what do you think?
  • AxtellAxtell Posts: 10,037 ✭✭
I don't think Carroll leaves until he's forced out.

Some guys are just not pro coaches - that doesn't make them bad coaches, just better suited to college than the pros. Why would he leave? He's got a wildly successful program, he's hugely popular in SoCal, and it's SoCal! Why would he want to go to a place like Arizona, which has been terrible forever, and work his ass off to try to turn around a program that seems to resist every and all attempt to change the culture? Even if he did, how popular is football in AZ?

I think he's in SoCal for the long haul.
