What's the name of the book for Eglit number attribution??

keetskeets Posts: 25,351 ✭✭✭✭✭
I feel kind of stupid asking since I should know and have the book, but it's a big negatoree on both. So what's the book's title and if it's available in different editions, which is the latest?? Thanks.

    Columbiana, by Nathan Eglit.

It's a catalog of medals produced for the World's Columbian Exposition in 1893. Out of print, and really tough to find. I don't have a copy either.

OK, i wasn't aware that the numbers pertained solely to WCE medals. is there anywhere that stuff by Eglit and Rulau are cross-referenced?? anywhere the a composite listing of all numbers can be found and perhaps a brief description by Eglit, or is the book the only game in town??

Eglit is solely WCE. I don't know of any other comprehensive listing other than Eglit itself, although you can sometimes piece together specific cross-references if you're looking for something in particular.

Rulau also wrote a book that covers some WCE stuff. I don't have a copy of that book either, so I don't know what's in it, but I think it's still in print. See Discovering America. The Coin Collecting Connection. There is also overlap with several other of Rulau's books.

What information are you looking for?

well, i have "Discovering America............" by Rulau and wasn't looking for anything specific, just the ability to identify and attribute with the proper numbers when i find medals unknown to me. the answer you gave about only WCE medals was what i (didn't) want to know!!!image
  • Somehow I was thinking there was somebody somewhere attributing and numbering little baby eagles.

Some of Rulau's books include Eglit numbers. For example, the Washington book by Rulau and Fuld does give Eglit numbers.

Eglit is Columbiana only. It is subtitled something about "Medallic art....." yet it has some listings of tickets in there. There are a few known medals that are not listed. Once the SCD book is done, I'm starting Eglit. I have a lot of pictures, which the reference sorely needs. It also needs to get organized. I may even renumber everything to get it in order. It seems as if he just put a number as he found things. I'm not sure how best to organize it, but I'm thinking about it. I'm already looking for Columbiana medals to purchse so I can get pictures.

FWIW, the new HK book will have a cross reference to Eglit and Rulau.
  • I'm curious about the "new HK book". Is it available?

I have a "Xerox copy" of Eglit, the original HK book and an auction catalog detailing the auction of the William H. Hale collection of Columbian Exposition medals and related material by Charles Kirtley back in 1989.

I wonder if anyone has taken the trouble to digitally cross-reference and fully illustrate these medals. I have been building a database using MS Access and am about 1/4 of the way through Eglit's Columbiana. I foresee it taking me at least a full week or two to finish this database, but i hope it will be exactly what I need to attribute the many medals in my collection that don't seem to be listed by Eglit or HK.

been some time since I asked and in the interim, maybe 6-7 years ago, I managed to obtain a signed copy of "Columbiana" and have found it to be very helpful.
