Ending Auctions Early

Nothing chaps my arse more than people who put auctions up and then end the items early because they fielded offers on the side. I had my eye on something for the past few days and deliberately didn't bid on numerous items because I was going to save up and blow my proverbial wad on this item and the seller ends it early. This item was a once a year listing, something that simply DOES NOT come along at all.
Why wouldn't you just put a crazy BIN with BO available if you were going to field offers?
Sorry. Just had to vent.

Say no to ending auctions early and also to bid retractions.

If the card was that desireable, I would have emailed the seller to end the auction early as well. If nothing else, it will make it look suspicious to the seller when at least one other person does.
When I'm the seller and I get MORE than one offer for an item, I say to myself, "hey, there's going to be a bidding war -- good!!!"
Never hurts to try, you know?
the item belongs to the seller and basically they can do what they want with it. perhaps the seller got cold feet since no bids had been put on it and wanted to keep the item. ebay allows for this so i see nothing wrong with it. I don't do it or like it myself. Next time put a bid up and possibly then the seller would not end it early.

how do you know it was sold offline?

That's happened to me so much it makes me sick. Just as a suggestion, email the seller and ask him/her about the card and end it with "I look forward to bidding on your auction". Ever since I started doing that, I haven't seen one pulled.
Coincidence? Perhaps... But if it ain't broke, don't fix it

Good stuff.

That, among other things, is the difference between you and I.

Steve, there were 8 bids on the item when it was pulled. I know it was sold offline because when I inquired with the seller as to why the auction got pulled they told me they received an offer they thought was fair. I notified the seller what my snipe was set at and I haven't heard back yet from them.
This cracks me up ...
"You snooze you lose."
Then, 3 sentences later, "I don't do it or like it myself." Does it get uncomfortable, constantly sitting on those fence posts?

<< <i>I've had my share of items I was watching either change price or get taken down. Now I simply place a low ball bid when I see an item I want and also enter the higher snipe. The initial bid keeps the seller from changing the "rules" in the middle of the game and is an incentive to not end early. >>
That is pretty much the way I handle ebay auctions as well, although in Arthur's case it didn't matter. The guy had bids and still canceled. Auctions that end early and bid retractions suck.
My daughter was diagnosed with type 1 diabetes at the age of 2 (2003). My son was diagnosed with Type 1 when he was 17 on December 31, 2009. We were stunned that another child of ours had been diagnosed. Please, if you don't have a favorite charity, consider giving to the JDRF (Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation)

Bottom line, ebay allows it. A seller can end an auction early. I don't like it and have never done it myself though.
THUMP!! me falling off fence.

<< <i>No Art it is not uncomfortable. I simply tried to give the other viewpoint. In your original post YOU DID NOT state that bids had been made, only stated that the auction was ended early.

Fair enough. Steve, I realize that you were playing devil's advocate. Just didn't appreciate the "you snooze, you lose" comment in addition to it. You're right, I should've mentioned those facts in the beginning but I genuinely did not want to start a thread about my particular auction, per se, as I did a general thread/vent about the practice as a whole.
Guess everything happens for a reason though. I found the perfect gift for my fiancee last night so spent the money on that. Damn irony.
Arthur
You are better off.
I did not mean to P... you off when i said 'snooze you lose' just was stating a fact.
anyway, like I said earlier I don't like it when auctions are ended earlier either, especially when the item is sold offline.
