So are they the same? Is it in the Top 100 / Hot 50?

I don't think so, Marty. You might look to see if there is a gouge through the O of DOLLAR. IN any event, VAM-1A is not a rare VAM. Your 8 does appear to exhibit some doubling though. There are no list (top-100, hot-50, super clashed dies) coins with the 1881-S date. All of the interesting VAMs of the date involve things on the reverse (chip on wing or wreath, gouges and breaks).
