Let's say in the last 10 years. Searching rolls doesn't count. I recieved an 1897 Indian in change at a McDonald's drive-thru last year.

How about you?

That's pretty nice. Looks like a nice XF-40. My 97 was only G-4 unfortunately.

  • I got back in change a really worn 1939 Jefferson 5 cents about two years ago. I wonder where that had been! It is now somewhere in my junk jar!

Hmmmm...I think it was an 1897 V Nickel in about FR, also found a few others, on in VG and the other so corroded its almost impossible to make the date out. Found several IHCs from the 1890s. Additionally found no less than twenty buffalo nickels and two 1909 Pennies. Handled a lot of money a couple years ago.

  • I've had a few dateless Buffalo nickels over the years. Jeffs from the 30's every once in a while. Early wheats too. Nothing in good shape though.

I too got an 1897 IHC in change, but that was near 10 years ago as I recall, and I can't tell you how I got it because I wasn't even 10 years old yet.

I received an IHC in change form a supermarket a few years ago; 1907 if I recall correctly.

Wow, I feel left out. I've only received a 1920 Wheat Cent. Thirty years ago I received a 1906 indian cent, my oldest to date.

I think the oldest I've ever received was a 1910 Lincoln.

In change in the last 10 years? A couple nickels, a '38 Jeff and an undated Buff. Used to get all sorts of old coins in collecting on my paper route as a kid. The oldest and weirdest one ever by far was an 1876 20c piece that I got in change at a market around 1970. The cashier saw it looked weird and gave me an extra nickel when she realized it wasn't a full quarter. Wonder whose coin collection had been raided to finance a munchie run.

Are you saying the cashier looked at it and realized it was a twenty cent piece, and therefore gave you another nickel? I didn't know cashiers in 1970 were familiar with twenty-cent pieces !! I'd say the cashier's behavior was even more bizarre than the person who spent it ... image

As a kid in the 1960's I remember getting IHC's regularly, Mercs and Buffs (often with the date gone), and an occasional worn SLQ or V nickel. I remember getting a worn Barber quarter once ... that intrigued me ... maybe that's why I now collect them. But one of my friends actually got a worn flying eagle cent in change !!!!!!!! That must have been around 1970. I have to admit I was jealous, but I thought it was very cool.

I think she thought it was Canadian at first. It was a long time ago. Never know but perhaps she's a collector today. Most people don't pause and look at what appears to be a different sort of coin.

A twenty cent piece in change is definitely a cool find, an 1876 makes it even better. (Too bad it wasn't a CC!) I've never gotten one of those in change, nor any of the unusual denominations. In the sixties I did get an occasional Morgan or Peace dollar in change, more recently a 1907 nickel. A friend of mine recently got a 1900 Barber quarter in change.

  • 1918 Merc in change at the liquor store. You tend to get more old coins in change at liquor stores than any where else. Wonder why?image

I received a 1927 buffalo nickel VF earlier this year. When I was a teenager in the early 60s I found a flying eagle cent, but that was not a big deal in those days.

About four years ago, my nephew did receive a two-cent piece in his change. He assumes the person who gave it to him thought it was a quarter. It was an 1864 Large motto in XF.

I received a 1911 dime at a restaurant. I asked for dimes for a dollar bill after paying my tab since I had noticed that an unusual coin had been used by the person in front of me at the register. The year was 1971 and I still have the coin, a nice vf.

I think it was last winter sometime that I recieved a 1916-D wheatie from a self-checkout at the local Walmart in change - about the oldest I have found in a long time. I did get a 1909VDB in the early 80's in change at a gas station. This past summer my neighbor knocked on my door (knows I collect coins) and handed me at first what I thought to be a slug- then realized it was an 1890 V nickel worn almost smooth. He got it in change earlier in the day at a McDonalds.

Wonder if it was a cool variety. There are plenty for that issue.
