Help with a 1969 Nolan Ryan Topps Card & the seller dharmalogic

Hello. I am looking to put together a Complete 1969 Topps set in NM condition (the year my wife was born) and an starting my focus on the Ryan card first (well actually second as I just bought the Jackson RC). anyway, I am looking at an auction on ebay and wanted to get the opionion of you Ryan experts out there. The card looks amazing to me from the scans but i am not sure if it could be trimmed and as i am new to buying 1969 i though i would get some advice. Also has anyone ever dealt with this buyer...dharmalogic? here is the link any and all help would be great. I would like to buy and then grade hoping for a 7 or better or just buy a graded 7.

i would suggest buying a psa 7 or better card, that way you get what you want. rolling the dice may or may not get the results you desire...

I know...it is almost too good to be true...which is my concern...that and the 20% restocking fee for returned cards raises a few eyebrows too. I've been doing the ebay gig for a lot of years now and this is the first time i have ever run into this...mind you I have only ever dealt in 80's Hockey, 70's high-end baseball and modern high-end baseball...never 60s or older...

The scan is good enough to measure exact height and width. The ratio of height to width should be the exact same as on a card you know not to be trimmed. This method is useful for slabbed cards from junk graders or raw. I usually go out to 3 decimal places.

There is another thread going on Dharmalogic which mentions a history of purchasing PRO cards - so don't gt your hopes too high - just do the math on length divided by height.

    Thanks Mike,

I read that thread and thought the name sounds familar...oh well...guess i'll just have to invest in a PSA 7. Cheers!

  • I have two 69 Ryans. One is beat ten ways to heck, the other is in a BVG holder (BVG 6). Comparing the two I have to the scan, it doesn't strike me that the card in the auction has been trimmed.

Of course, I'd be scared senseless to buy any Ryan card from before 72 (and any other valued card before then) in a raw state. Counterfeiters are getting too darn good these days. And the 69 Topps issues are probably on the easier end of the scale to counterfeit, due to the plain design and the card stock. Topps actually used a decent card stock that year (instead of the horrible cardboard they used for most 60s and 70s issues). Counterfeiters generally have a tough time procuring "crummy old Topps grade cardboard." *grin*

The seller's high feedback is a good thing. The fact that bidder IDs and auction IDs in the feedback are hidden is not. Plus, he charges a 20% re-stocking fee, which could hurt if you got that card and wanted to return it (depending on the final bid, I could see that being $30-40).

Probably best for peace of mind to bid on a slabbed PSA 7.

Though I can see why you'd like to win that card. If the scan is to be believed, that card could probably get a PSA 8 (assuming your submission doesn't end up at the desk of the "grader from hell" that people on the board sometimes mention). Corners look nice, centering is great. Can't judge surface from a scan, but seems top notch. BTW, that white mark on the upper-right where the border is, is on both of the card I have.

I just don't believe that a card dealer would not submit a card like this to PSA for grading. Why not spend a few extra bucks to slab it and reap the rewards when you sell it? I guess that question is a rhetorical one.

Take a look at the 34 Goudey Gehrig that seller has for auction.

It is definately TRIMMED. I think the Ryan RC they have is trimmed also.

I didnt really check too many others but between those 2 and having a private bidder list they get a big fat STAY CLEAR from me !!!#!#!@#!

  • This was on another thread. The guy sells PRO graded cards and the raw ones are usually ones he cracks out of the holders. What more needs to be said?

What's amazing is that people will pay good money for these auctions despite all the warning signs.

Ron Burgandy said it best in the other thread. These cards are clearly trimmed, and the seller knows they are trimmed. Further, the seller knows that a good % of his buyers will figure out that these cards are trimmed once they get their hands on them, so he'll make money on the 20% restocking fee.

I thought ebay was doing away with private auctions?
