1970 or 1971 topps football.. Which set should I build?

Hi-
I'm planning on building either a 1970 or 1971 topps football set in psa 7/8/9 in 2007.. These are the first years I collected football cards and both sets bring back fond memories.. Which set would be the easiest to build and complete in 2007 at an affordable price??? Any input or thoughts from other football collectors would be appreciated!! Thanks!
Paul

  • 1970 would be much easier and less expensive to complete in high grade.

    Easy question..Easiest/most affordable? 1970...

I'm here to question, not to inspire or build up. To live how I want, as I see fit,
according to my values and my needs. Nothing holds dominion over me, I stand alone as the ruler of my life.

The 70 set looks cooler, too, IMHO.

Same here, Paul. Every year at this time, I would pull out my raw 70 set and think back to that Christmas morning as a 10 yr old when I got a few wax packs in my stocking. I remembered being so excited about getting the 70 Roman Gabriel card, which I have on my wall right now above my desk, along with my other favorite football card, the 71 Namath. Good luck and have fun.
  • The 70' will be the easier and more affordable. The 71' is condition sensitive and higher grades will be more $$$.
    Either way, enjoy the ride.
ALWAYS LOOKING FOR HIGH GRADE VINTAGE SAN DIEGO CHARGERS, ESPECIALLY OL' LANCE!!!
  • I agree with everyone about the 70 set. I was doing this set a year or two ago in 8/9 but dropped it to focus on my Redskins team sets. My only advice would be to not waste your money buying 7's; stick to 8s and 9s.

Plus there are more high grade 1970 1st series cards out there as a few vending boxes have been opened in the last few years so the prices have dropped big time for 1970.

Current obsession, all things Topps 1969 - 1972

  • Hey Paul - My vote is 71 - In about a year I am about 75% but yes there are few high priced ones. That year is easily Namath's best looking card. My main issue with the 70s is just too much brown border - not enough picture. The other thing is that the 71 set has the foundation of the dynasties of the 70s - several Dolphin RCs, obviously Greene and Bradshaw, Lanier's RC, etc. Good luck either way.

That's the main factor arguing for the '71 set. The two Steeler stalwarts, Sugar Bear, Kenny Houston's rookie...lots of good stuff like that.

Incidentally, I think the '71 and '72 Namath are tied for sheer coolness, but that's just me. I like my Broadway Joe with that flowing hair that made him so cool to me as a kid. (My other favorite guy in the league was Unitas...can't explain why, I just dug those two guys equally.)

Despite the sentimental value of the 70 cards, I do think the 71s are much, much better looking and a more worthwhile set to build.

Go for the 70 set....for a jealous reason, I'm working on the 71 and want to keep the prices downimageimage
