No napkin and no NGC. image

They are two different coins for sure. Same die marriage but different die state all together.

    Hey clad.
I am going to say you upgraded an XF coin with a high end AU coin. The new coin may be MS but I can't tell thru all that lusterimage which is a good thing. Both nice coins, but the new coin is a real looker.
Some coins are just plain "Interesting"

You got it kiddo, LM10/V7 both of them. Now, which one is the later die state? I know the pics make it hard to do this kind of work but there is at least one clearly visible marker that should give it away.

My personal opinion is that the first coin has been dipped and retoned, how it got the toning I've no idea. The second coin, in my opinion, is original...for whatever that's worth now a days LOL. Interesting grade guesses so far.

I would guess that determining die state on this marriage deals with S2 on the reverse. So based on that, I am guessing that the first coin is a later die state because S2 appears to be 'filled' to a greater degree than on the second coin.

    I'm new at this. image

You're on to something with the S's but look at a different S.

TwoSides2aCoin got the grade guesses right on. I grade the top coin AU50 (barely though...the reverse is a borderline 45) and the bottom coin AU58. The bottom coin is now my set piece.

Amanda - look at the upper loop of S1 and you should see what you're looking for. image

reverse EE was used for two die marriages, the first was the 1835 LM-10/V-7 in which S2's upper loop fills (examples of the 1835 LM-10 exist without the upper loop of S2 filled!) and then the upper loop of S1 fills. The second use was in the 1837 LM-4/V-2, also known as the "Small 5C" variety for Redbook variety collectors. In the 1837 LM-4/V-2, you will find that both S1 and S2 are filled. Die state can reasonably be estimated using this kind of information.

    Correct BD. image

The method you can use to see which of the two coins pictured is the later die state is in the upper loop of S1. Neither of them are "filled" but you can see a small die chip in the bottom coin. The top coin is clear and free of any defect. Thus the top coin is an earlier die state than the lower coin.

Yeah it is small to see on these photos but remember the pics are many times magnified compared to holding the half dime in your hand. You think that chip is small now hehheeh
