1921-D VAM 1R Morgan dollar questions...

Is this one EDS or MDS? The lump of metal isn't over the T. Looks like it's cracked all around it and the piece is ready to fall out.
Are they hard to find in mint state? I noticed the 1921-D registry has only two (MS60 and MS62).

Neat. Not sure about either of your questions, Norm. I do know I did pass up two mint state ones recently. If I had realized this was the only 21-D variety with the reverse clashed die, I would have snapped them up. I thought there were just cracks, bot breaks, and didn't see any letter transfer. After having one after another 21-D find declined by Leroy, I passed on both of them. Live and learn.

Wow, very close but I'd say more EDS than LDS. The 1R is super tough to find.

I believe Rob's MS62 and Tim Pages MS60 coins are EDS. Rob, please correct me if I'm wrong. My ANACS AU58 is LDS image
  • I'd call it eds as well. My 62 is a little later than the coin pictured but I also have an ANACS 58 that is very LDS.

Check out VAMworld to see the LDS 58 break. The triangle at the corner of the T should raise up to the level of the letter.

Also on the clashed die, it is not the only reverse clash I've seen now. They are rare on 21-D's but 1R is no longer the only one known.

Thanks for that update, Rob. It is definitely worth looking for this VAM when I see future clashes on a 21-D anyway.

  • Thank you gentlemen. I was debating on sending it to ANACS because it looks like an MS63. I think I'll keep it raw and look for a later die state example.
