I'm very confused as to when Stack's is having its upcoming auctions...
I have to get out of the ANR mindset of a few, choice, boutique-style auctions per year, and get into the Stack's mindset of monthly auctions. I think that the Remington typewriters at Stack's are clacking away in a fury, because there seems to be a lot of auctions coming up. However, I am getting confused trying to keep track of all of the dates and what looks like inconsistencies between their email correspondence and their website.
For example, the website lists the following upcoming auctions:
December 13, 2006
Coin Galleries *
January 2-3, 2007
Orlando, FL
Consignment Deadline November 7th
January 15, 2007
New York, NY
Ancient and World Coins
January 16-18, 2007
New York, NY
Then I got an email from the firm with a nice announcement attached, which indicates the following:
The December Coin Galleries Event – Mail and Internet Sale

American Numismatic Society Collection

The January auctions confuse me. Is it possible that Stack's will be holding auctions on January 11th, 15th, 16th, 17th, and 18th, as well as January 2nd? That seems like a lot in a short period of time. Am I missing something, or do they hold different types of auctions simultaneously (such as separate world, ancient, US, currency, etc. auctions on consecutive dates)?

January 2, 2007: Live auction, Orlando, FL. US stuff (the old ANR scheduled date)
January 11, 2007: Small auction in conjunction with the ANS Annual Dinner Gala, just 101 coins from their duplicate stocks.
January 15, 2007: Furreign coin auction, NYC (Stack's annual sale at the time of the NY International)
January 16-18: Americana auction, NYC (Stack's annual sale focusing on historic American issues like colonials, medals, etc.)
There. See why I'm sleep deprived like the other guys click-clacking around me?
While I'm not "The Decider," I suspect the Orlando, International, and Americana sales will remain annual events, thus making January a VERY busy month.
Betts medals, colonial coins, US Mint medals, foreign coins found in early America, and other numismatic Americana
coins that they don't want to sell in the larger live auctions which tend toward more expensive items.
At least that is the way it was done in the past with Stack's. At this point I am not impressed with the Stack's/ANR merger.
The auction web page is poorly designed and an overall mess, the old one was much better and for some reason even though I have been a customer of Stack's for years (even have that account identification card) I now have to "prove" I am worthy enough to be accepted for bidding in their auctions by sending references (they never got back with me on that so I missed their last auction).
Some of this might be policies brought over from ANR, I don't know. I'm not sure if I am going to continue trying to deal with
them or just give it up. No response to emails has soured me on them at this time.
The "old ANR" folks are very responsive to customer emails. I suggest working through them. Yes, ANR did previously qualify bidders. It is really not a big deal to list a couple references. Heck, if you bought from "old Stack's", use them as a reference.
I expect that the customer service will be greatly enhanced by the client-focused philosophy of "old ANR".
John K,
Can you provide any information about the ANS duplicates? Are they raw? Any rare date material? Any interesting stories or pedigrees? Short preview of the sale?

I did list the refernces and emailed to them but heard nothing in response. I don't know why the old Stack's accounts couldn't just
transfer over to the new company, maybe part of the merger deal was that each company wanted to verify each others past bidders
or something, who knows?. I've done business with the old B&M but not ANR and found them OK to work with in the past.
This is probably just some growing or merger pains they are going through at the moment and it could be that coordinating things with
half of the company in NY and the other in NH needs some smoothing out. I think I will give them another try and see how it goes.
Are you in the Fur business ?
Stewart
ps I don't think Heritage has begun auctioning furs as yet !
Thanks for the clarification.
If I show up at the Stack's HQ for lot viewing, can I get a personal audience with you for some grading tips on gold and early copper?

RYK -- I didn't see the stuff or write the catalogue, but I believe it's all raw and ranges from varieties of early types that were held in multiple duplicates all the way to 20th century gold commems. It's just a small grouping but there are some neat things.
Stew -- furreign is anything that ain't Merican.
Longacre -- come late enough in the afternoon and you might even get a dinner invite. And I'll show you my slimy green brush.
