A loupe always helps. And knowing what your looking for (list in hand) and what your price range is helps, too.

It hardly ever happens when I buy something for my collection. Those coins have to clear such a high hurdle that blunders don't slip through.

On the other hand, it happens regularly when buying for inventory, especially when buying crackouts.

BTW, crackouts are a non-issue when buying for my collection. I don't collect plastic so I won't bother cracking even the most conservatively graded coins.

I have found that the biggest problem for me is assessing the color of the coin with the lighting at the show. The color always looks a lot different at home, sometimes better, more often worse.

I carry a magnifier that has a little light in it at shows - its not the greatest per se, but it keeps things consistent.
