the loupe has saved me from a few problem coins in the past
A loupe always helps. And knowing what your looking for (list in hand) and what your price range is helps, too.

On the other hand, it happens regularly when buying for inventory, especially when buying crackouts.
BTW, crackouts are a non-issue when buying for my collection. I don't collect plastic so I won't bother cracking even the most conservatively graded coins.

I carry a magnifier that has a little light in it at shows - its not the greatest per se, but it keeps things consistent.
