What do you think will happen in 2008 when the state quarters series is over as far as the Wis. extra leaf variety goes? Do you think the prices will go through the roof? How many collectors believe that they need these coins for the whole set?
Earth is the insane asylum for the universe.

There will be a bunch of TV and magazine ads for the complete sets, shoppe at home tv will have them plated with every imaginable metal short of plutonium.
They will remain popular for a time, whether that is a month, a year or a decade I don't know. But them it will seek it's own level and remain there for time to come. There will be some higher priced sets such as 1999 and 2001 (both silver) and those will remain valuable as many will have been busted up by that time.
In the long run, I don't see them as a rare item, but always as an item of interest for several reasons.
1 - They were the US first attempt at that type of coin program
2 - Most everyone will have a favourite state or states to complete
3 - Birth state gifts for babies will always be a cool thing
All in all, it will be a successful program but not a particularly valuable one.
<< <i>Interest in the varieties will fade as other items appear to be hyped. 1964 pointed-tail dimes, anyone? >>
I have one (BU). I bought it from a dealer in 1965, when i was 10. He told me it was going to really increase in value.

I know the earth will make one revolution of the sun in 365.242 days, give or take a wobble.

I remember paying $6.00 for an Unc. 1960-P small date Lincoln cent long ago.
What is it going for these days? Oh well.....
