Denver Mint tour

I'm heading down the "mountain" today and tomorrow morning I have a tour for 6 at the Denver Mint. Anybody been there lately? Time is limited. I haven't been there since 1973 when I was kid.

I took the tour last August. It has been scaled down some from many years ago but is still fairly interesting.

Be sure to check out the display room as there are some very nice displays at the end of the tour.

Oh yeah, no cameras allowed so leave it in your car.
I decided to change calling the bathroom the John and renamed it the Jim. I feel so much better saying I went to the Jim this morning.

I, and my family did the nickel tour of the Denver Mint. A very cold day, indeed. I saw the new (to me) horizontal presses. Coins are fed by gravity at 14 per second. These machines are smaller than the vertical presses I remember. Most interesting was one machine working on the new 2007 D George Washington dollar. I was up on a cat walk so I couldn't see any details on the coins. There were huge bins a SAC-Pres dollar blanks. Some of the viewing glass was blocked off to protect the edge imprinting and a new Numismatic section that should be open next year.

Never been there. (Denver, the Mint, Colorado, or anywhere in the region).

I have, however, been to the museums at Charlotte, Dahlonega, and San Francisco. Been to Philly but not to the Mint.

The floor tour of the Denver Mint at the ANA in August. It was too cool for words.
While you're in the area, go south to Colorado Springs and head up Pikes Peak.

No coins, either. They didn't catch one on the way in, but got it on the way out... I set off the metal detector, and after using a wand against my wallet and x-raying it, they found the coin. They removed EVERYTHING in my wallet, and uncovered the coin buried deep inside a credit card pocket. It was a 1990-P dime. This was 2005... in Denver. Yup, I tried to pull a fast one and got caught image

Jeremy, I think the OP is referring to a standard mint tour, not the production floor tour! 2image
