Ever Make a Bonehead Mistake Bidding on Ebay Items, Only to Realize it's Too Late?

I found an auction of 11 1911 Lincoln Cents in VG for $2.50. I got so excited that I thought them to be 1911-S coins and put down a max of $10. Well, you could say that I paid close to $10 for them. The sad part is I didn't even realize it until the 2nd day I had them in my hand.image

I thought I was bidding on a MS 14-D Cent. It was late and I was tired, so I put in a low bid of $25 to start to test the waters.

Well, after 3 days of the auction I realized I was bidding on a MS 41-D cent. I paid about $18 for this BN "toned" coin.

Yep. I once snapped up what I thought was a stupidly low BIN for a pile of assorted proof sets. I should have read the description instead of just the title. It was a bunch of leftover coins, a couple from each set. To add insult to injury, it was a Blue Moon listing. image

  • I recently hit a $49 BIN for a NGC MS66* Mercury Dime.....when I got the envelope after about 3 weeks of waiting (I paid via Paypal) It felt empty so I contacted the seller as I wanted to protect myself in case he sent a sealed enpty envelope. I took a second look at the auction and realized that the coin had been cracked out of the holder and was raw image

Needless to say everywhere on the auction it stated NGC MS66* in bold 24 font...and then in like 4 font it did state the coin had been removed from the holder. The seller wasn't happy about the return but he had a clearly stated return policy on his auctions if the purchaser was unhappy for any reason so....I was not happy and frankly.....how the coin would have ever received a star is beyond me....no way jose....image

    Scott,
That's quite a confession. You should feel better now. image

Last spring, when I was looking at a bunch of PCGS lincolns, I saw a 58MS68RD that looked like it was flying under the radar so I quickly placed a bid.
A few minutes later I was the proud owner of a pretty knicked up NTC holdered cent.image

I had a snipe programmed for an item with no bids. Sometime during the auction, the seller completely changed the item -- new title, new description, new pictures, new everything. You can do that when there's no bids. My snipe went off just as planned, and I ended up winning something I didn't want.

I pay a little bit more attention now...

Yep! I have put snap bids on coins only to pray that someone would outbid me!

    Definitely bonehead maneuvers!

  • I have done it on several times. Sometimes I forget to read the item description completely. Specifically I purchased a 1934 Texas Commem on ebay. The auction picture showed it in an NGC MS65 slab. I did not read far enough. The item description described how the coin had been cracked out and placed in an album for some time. I got a raw coin when I though I was getting a slabbed coin. It still looked nice, but only graded MS64. That was a lesson for me.

I snapped up a 1883 Morgan graded MS-65 by PCGS with BIN somehow thinking at the time it was a 1883cc. It wasn't till I received the coin that I realized what I had done.

  • lol @ all of these stories.

I was cruising the auctions on eBay one night recently and saw a 1964 Kennedy PR68CAM for something like BIN for $275.00. My mind was reading "Accented Hair" into the auction and I started the process of BIN and right before I committed to it, I read the auction again and realized it was just a 1964. Whew!

Other than that one, I don't think I have screwed up lately although do not check my feedback or you might feel otherwise. image

In just the last couple of days I got moving too fast and put in a bid for a half eagle that was about $100 too high. Of course, I won the lot at my maximum bid. I had been looking at a bunch of bullion coins-- ounces and half ounces. Somehow I got into a screen with half eagles. I saw "eagle." I must have thought "ounce." Oops!

1829 dime Curl Base 2 - - uh, oh! It's a half dime! Fortunately it was just a low opening bid, that someone eventually overbid me.

  • Bid $999 on this one

    Bid $899 on this one

For some reason, don't ask why cause I haven't a clue, I thought I was bidding on rolls of 1/10 oz. AGE's...image

I didn't realize what I had done until 5 hours prior to auction end. Bidding was at about $250 or so. Thought I was gonna make a killin, then the light came on, too late to retract.

Anyhoo I've got 2 rolls of ASE on the way.
