Need Help: (Possible Steel Cent Error of 1944 & 1934)!

Here I have photo's of two steel cents I won from a lot of coins on an Ebay auction. The lot included a number of Lincoln cents from all dates and grades containing counterstamp marks from the free masons. I could not see dates when the auction took place, nor did I care, this was purely for the counterstamp. And because I could tell there were two steel cents I figured them to be 1943. Well, these two steel cents show the dates of 1944 and 1934! Are these error coins or are they fake or altered pieces?

Do they stick to a magnet?
It is not exactly cheating, I prefer to consider it creative problem solving!!!

If they don't stick to a magnet then they are not steelies... I think people used to dip pennies in mercury to get them silver colored in the past.

I figured they wouldn't be authentic, but that I would give them a whirl. Thanks.

  • They just look like harshly cleaned copper cents. Even if they WERE steelies, they would be worth very little due to the tampering with.

    Legit one:

  • Looks like they have had mercury used on them to me. Really nice counterstamps. I collect those also.

Nice 1944 steel cent, Lloyd! Do you (or does anyone) know where the 1944-S steel cent is?

  • certainly look to be altered coins
