Rookie Cards of the '70s Registry....All Ranks Done! Vote for Honorable Mention Cards!

EDITED: I've added the official ranks of the players that will be in on the request to PSA for the "Rookies of the '70s" registry set.

I used the WARP point system to determine who should be included in the set and used 35.0 as the cutoff for each year's cards. WARP (Wins Above Replacement Player) is the number of wins this player contributed, above what a replacement level hitter, fielder, and pitcher would have done, with adjustments only for within the season. This set will include players that were solid major league players, but not necessarily superstars. Just a fun set to put together for those that like the rookie cards of those guys in the late 70s and 80s that made an impact on baseball.

Looks like the set is going to include nearly 200 cards! Should be fun! Here are the players, per year, that will be included in the set....

Once the 'ranks' are completed, I have to place the weights on all of these. I'll put the weights together after the ranks and then ask for some feedback before submitting it to PSA.

Here are the ranks of all of the '70s rookies (ranked at a 50.0 WARP or higher, still not completed)....

Are there any 'minor stars' then that should be added if you do a set of '70s Rookies to my list? There have to be many more in the late 70s as well. I pulled all of these from the latest SMR and looked to see who had the "R" for rookie designation next to their name. So, there has to be more than this to be added, I'm assuming.

I added a couple of cards, but is there any more input in the minor to mid-star level rookies for the '70s?

  • I would add Bob Horner and Bob Welch to the 1979 set.

    David
  • Here is my list of "?" players that should be "*" players:

1970: Blue - great pitcher for the A's dynasty.

1971: Simmons, Foster and Luzinski - all-star players that made significant contributions from the mid-70's to late 70's. Besides The Bull was one of my favorite players.

1972: Cey - all-star player during the mid to late 70's. Loved watching him play.

1973 - Evans - consistently good player with one of the the best arms in baseball.

1976: Randolph - all-star player for the Yankees during the 1970's championship run

I might go the route of considering players longevity..............15 years or more in the majors would qualify....I would add Munson of course.....

I think you've done a good job of including almost all of the notable rookie cards of the decade. I might also include J.R. Richard in there ('72).
"My father would womanize, he would drink. He would make outrageous claims like he invented the question mark. Sometimes he would accuse chestnuts of being lazy. The sort of general malaise that only the genius possess and the insane lament. Our childhood was typical. Summers in Rangoon, luge lessons. In the spring we'd make meat helmets. When we were insolent we were placed in a burlap bag and beaten with reeds - pretty standard really."

And Madlock for sure. The guy won 4 batting titles!!! Amazing he doesn't get more consideration for the HOF.

  • One idea might be to use "objective" criteria to determine what rookie cards make the grade. For example, Baseball Prospectus has a comprehensive rating system where they rate every player in major league history based upon wins that player was worth over the hypothetical replacement player. Using that rating system, the top 11 players who had rookie cards in 1970 are:

    Darrell Evans 115.6
    Vida Blue 79.6
Thurman Munson 72.9 (obviously would have had more but for his untimely death)
    Gene Tenace 72.4
    Bill Buckner 67.2
    Jerry Reuss 67.0
    Bill Russell 64.0
    Larry Bowa 61.1
    Dave Cash 60.9
    John Mayberry 50.1
    Oscar Gamble 49.4

Hal McRae's rookie card was in 1968 or he would be on the list between Russell and Reuss. After those 11 you have solid players like Bernie Carbo (35.4), Ralph Garr (31.9), Al Fitzmorris (28.3) all the way down to players who had a cup of coffee or less.

Set an arbitrary cut-off, for example at 50 (although with some leeway because no system can be that precise), and you have a collection of the best players who had rookie cards in the 1970s. Choose a higher number, like 75, and you have a collection of the elite players who had rookie cards in the 1970s.

Bill James also has a system called Win Shares which corroborates that top 11, although reordered slightly. (He also has Darrell Evans as the cream of the class with 363 Win Shares, while Gene Tenace is a distant second with 231). Pete Palmer also has an "objective" system for rating players. And, those are just a few of "objective" rating systems that are out there.

Thus, in addition to being a collection of the rookie cards of the top players of the 1970s it would be informative as well.

    Anyways, just an idea,

    Randy

    Randy, that's great!

So, now I just need to go Googlin' for these sites. Unless someone has links to them.

Also, need to find where there are lists of all rookie cards for each Topps issue throughout the 70s. Any help there?

I would seriously consider Gary Matthews and Buddy Bell ('73) and Chris Chambliss ('72). You know what a cool rookie card Chris has, since you collect the '72 set.

An added bonus on the Frank White card is that it also has Andre Thornton, who had a solid career with some none-too-stellar Indians teams.

I would endorse pretty much everybody listed here. (Glad to see some love for Bill Madlock, who was a superb player.)

Boy, I'm having a heck of a time pulling a list of all rookie cards from a particular set. Does Beckett.com include all "RC" designations on their online price guide?

I don't remember if those Beckett Baseball Card Plus (thicker price guides) have all of the cards of note (specifically rookie cards) listed.

  • Arny,
I ordered the 2007 Standard Catalog of Baseball Cards yesterday and it should be here in the next day or two. Not sure if it designates rookie cards or not but I'll check when I get it.

    Awesome Mike! Thanks.

Anyone else have any suggestions? I've looked for checklist sites all over the internet and haven't found anything that designates all of the rookie cards for each of the sets.

  • Arny-
Well I received my 2007 Standard Catalog and I'm a little confused. When looking at the modern issues (post-1980), rookie cards are designated in bold italics - which is great. But in vintage issues (pre-1980), this is not necessarily the case. Some rookies are in italics (though non-bold) and some are neither in bold nor italics (for example - in 1970, Vida Blue RC is in italics and Bill Buckner RC is not). So it doesn't look like it provides the comprehensive list that I was hoping it would.

Does anyone have any explanation of the Standard Catalog's RC designations?

Mike, I was able to get online access to the Beckett.com site and it had everything that I needed.

Now, I've gone ahead and edited the first post to include the cards that will be in the set. I'm using the WARP rating of 35.0 or higher.

The set looks like it is off to a good start. A threshold of 35.0 WARP3 catches almost everybody who contributed anything during the 70s and 80s. Off the top of my head, among the players that fall short of that number, you might want to include Mark Fidrych and Lyman Bostock. The former because he was such a sensation in '76 before trashing his arm and the latter was well on his way to an all-star career before being murdered. Obviously, there might be a couple others that merit inclusion who fall short of 35.0 WARP3.

In any event, it looks like a fun set to collect.

    Thanks

Yup.....I've been thinkin' of adding one card per set that is a "fan favorite" sort of card. Like the Mark Fydrich and Lyman Bostock cards. Guys that 'coulda been' or 'were for a bit' but couldn't continue because of injury and/or other circumstances.

  • Arny, this is great. I'm really looking forward to following this set. Are you planning on posting scans of your additions and checking them off the list?

    Arthur
  • ArnyVeeArnyVee Posts: 4,245 ✭✭
Yes, I've posted a couple of scans on the "Mail" thread, but I'll be adding them here as I get them. I'll either place them here on this post as a year by year checklist or get a small free website or something and do it that way. Not sure.

    Should be fun!

So far, some of the bigger name cards that I've picked up are the E.Murray, D.Winfield, B.Madlock, D.Concepcion, G.Foster, J.Morris, Molitor/Trammell, Eckersley & O.Smith rookies. More to come!

In general, 35 is too low a cutoff. Mike Heath?

I would boost it to at least 50 (maybe even 60), and create several "exemptions" to allow player inclusion who didn't otherwise merit it - winning a ROY, Cy Young, MVP, batting or HR title for starters. A career of some length as a major league manager should also be an automatic qualification - maybe 500 games.

  • Arny,

I am a little late to this thread but nevertheless I am excited about Registry Set and plan on participating. I had a blast putting together the baseball ROY rookie set(90% complete) and have been looking for another interesting set to tackle.

So here are my thoughts...take from them which you want

I like the idea of a cut-off at 50 for the WARP...i think there are a lot of interesting players in the 50-60 range that I would hate to eliminate...but anything less than 50 includes too many scrubs...

I also like allowing players to be included if they have achieved something...I think ROY, MVP, CY, HR Title, BA Title for sure...then pitching (up for debate) ERA Leader and/or Saves Leader and/or Strikeout Leaders...I think a playing career over a certain time period say somewhere between 10-15 years...All-Star appearances(not sure on the number)...and also a career as a manager should get them in as well...

the above special inclusion rules seem like a lot but I doubt it adds that many more cards to the set...I do think we need to have some set criteria for these players as we don't want to have a bunch of players in some grey area...

If you would like help in researching these players...PM me or send me an email at andrewlawsmith@yahoo.com

  • Excited I am...I went ahead and cross-referenced the Batting Title Winners, HR Title Winner...the MVPs and CYs and ROYs

Batting Title Winners with WARP below 50 -
    Ralph Garr 1970 Topps #172

Homerun Title winners with WARP below 50 -
    Tony Armas 1977 Topps #492
    Gorman Thomas 1974 Topps #288
Ben Oglivie(no data yet) 1972 #761 (Ron Cey is on the card as well so it should not matter)

    MVPs under 50 WARP -
    Jeff Burroughs(no data yet) 1972 Topps #191

    CY under 50 WARP -
    Willie Hernandez 1978 Topps #99
    John Denny 1975 Topps #621
    Pete Vuckovich 1977 Topps #517
    Randy Jones 1974 Topps #173
Steve Stone(not sure what his WARP is yet) 1972 Topps #327

The ROYs from this era that are under 50 -
    1971 #52 Earl Williams
    1972 #141 Jon Matlock
1972 (not sure, but assume they are above 50) Chris Chambliss, Gary Matthews
    1973 (not sure) Al Bumbry
1974 Bake McBride - already included because of Brian Downing on same card
    1976 #30 John Montefusco
    1976 #592 Butch Metzger
1976 #599 Pat Zachery - already included because of Guidry
    1977 #265 Mark Fidrych
    1979 #586 Bob Horner
    1979 #705 Alfredo Griffin

So this adds another 15-18 cards...including batting titles, HR titles, MVP/CY and ROY

Hmm....I'm not sure about changing the ranks. I understand them, but there are a few of those that are between 35-50 that I would love to keep in the set.

Once I finish all of the ranks, I'll take a look at them by year again in detail. Interesting thoughts about the ROY, Batting Titles, etc.

It wouldn't be complete without a 1977 Mark Fidrych, regardless of what his WARP is --- the only card made with an all-star logo and a rookie cup on it. He captured baseball's heart in the summer of 1976.
    Enjoy your collection!

    Erik, I agree.

I plan on adding an "Honorable Mention" card to each set to recognize the true characters of the game like The Birdman or Bostock or Hrabosky. Hopefully I'll be able to find one per year that I can add to the list.

For instance, from the '70 list, here are some of the guys that just don't make the cut....

    Wayne Garrett RC
    Ralph Garr RC
    Reggie Cleveland RC
    Jim Spencer RC
    Mike Jorgensen RC
    Al Fitzmorris RC
    Pedro Borbon RC
    Jerry Morales RC
    Buck Martinez RC

....out of these, I would lean towards adding Ralph Garr because of some of the commentary of others here on the boards. But, what would your thoughts be on the '70 "Honorable Mention" card to add?
