Gold coin question

I was recently going through a box and came across two coins that were left to me by my grandparents. I've been doing some research on them around, but like most information found on the internet...I don't rely on it too much. Would anyone be able to tell me about looking into grading it? I looked at pcgs.com and I am assuming that most grading will be done by shipping the coins (something I am a little hesitant about).

I've taken some pictures of the front & back of the coins, sorry it's not the best. Any help would be appreciated. Thanks in advance!

looks like a standard 1908 "no motto" $20 Gold in MS63-MS65 - can't tell from the pics. @$800-$1500 depending on actual grade.

  • You need alot more light on the coin before I could hazard a guess on the the grade .
Look for a reputable coin shop near you and ask them their opinion. Then take it to another. And another.
    grading is very subjective.
If you want to keep the coin buy a nice intercept shield holder and enjoy.
if you want to sell get it graded by PCGS(highest resale value for plastic tombs)
  • It's hard to tell from the picture about the grade, but I think you'd be well advised to send it in to PCGS for grading, if you're planning on selling it. (If you're not planning on doing that, just put it someplace safe that's cool and dry.) There are two main ways to get coins graded by PCGS (without getting into the different fees for different levels of service): You can either send them the coin, or go to a show where they have representatives and have it graded there (which I think is more expensive, but presumably faster).

Looks like a very nice coin, by the way! image
If you haven't noticed, I'm single and miserable and I've got four albums of bitching about it that I would offer as proof.

It looks like a 1903 on my monitor image

  • Thanks for the advise. I've spoken to several local shops from the PCGS website, and it seems that I will have to send the coins in if I want them appraised.

It does look like 1903 but of course there's no such thing in the St. Gaudens design. It looks like a pretty nice 1908 No Motto and would definitely be worth sending off for authentication and grading.

image to the Forums, Iadas! ENjoy!

  • Shipping expensive things might me a little distressing, but it is safe. In this case the coin is valuable but not irreplacable. With insurance, even if your registered package was lost by a postal employee you would be covered.

Are both of the coins 1908 ?

You should be able to take the coin to some local dealers and talk to them.....

Just ask for an estimate on this 08 No Motto Saint and see what they say.....

Those $20 gold coins are often referenced as "saints" just so you sound like you know what you have.....

I can't tell from the photo but if it has been kicking around in a box for years, it might be pretty beat up and would not be worth grading. I think we should advise the owner not to waste grading fees if that is the case. In that case it is worth perhaps gold plus $50 or so, right?
