Why so much for this 1909 Indian cent?

Anybody see a S mint mark on this coin?

Must be the invisible S variety.image

All kidding aside, I don't see no S.
  • I won a bid on a 1909 IHC recently. I don't have it in hand, but the pics looked way better than that one, and I paid about half. (I'll have to see what it looks like when it arrives.) The person winning so far only has 1 feedback, so I'd say she is pretty green and might not know what to look for in terms of value. She bid it up all the way from $30 to $102.50. Maybe she sees something we don't, and she plans to cherry it.
If you haven't noticed, I'm single and miserable and I've got four albums of bitching about it that I would offer as proof.

Must be a variety of some sort. I'll see if someone on the Fly-In Club forum knows about this after the auction ends. If someone is trying to cherry this one, I don't want to screw them by announcing it to the IHC cherrypickers.

I shooting from the hip here, I'm at work.

But I believe the only var. for the 1909 IHC is Small L over Large L. But I do not believe you can see this from these pics, nor does this var bring this kind of premium.

Like I said I'm shooting from the hip here.

  • Check out the feedback of the current high bidder (at $102.50).

Only thing I can figure is 2 clueless bidders. Anybody else have a theory on this?

  • CaptinRon is right there is an L over L variety. But I have no idea how you could tell it from those images.
  • maybe two people spotted a variety
  • Someone asked if it was an 09-S and the seller said yes...if you look real close at the reverse picture.....it does appear there is an "S" there....but I would want a better picture before I placed a better bid on that coin.
  • No way is it a 1909-S. Even sellers description says Philadelphia...

Looks like oxidation (green copper rust) on the reverse and some corrosion on the obverse too. Not sure what someone sees in the coin in the first place.

I don't know what the seller's smoking, but there's no way there's an S on the coin. I blew up the area below the wreath:

I don't know if the seller is scamming or not, but I sure don't see an S there.

.....This is 1909 Indian Head Penny........although I have 35 years experience I am not an expert!

Anytime the seller says "I not an expert" & "this item is sold as is with no warranties" BIG red flags, stay away!
Pitty someones going to get stuck with such a POS & pay a big premium for it.

You could be right. I know I slightly overpaid when I was knew. However, don't always judge greenness by the feedback #. A newbie could be very experienced. Also, someone with high feedback, but not much in coins, could be very new (to coins).

I've been told I tolerate fools poorly...that may explain things if I have a problem with you. Current ebay items - Nothing at the moment
