Canadian nickels with scratched X's on obverse?

I have gotten a few bulk lots of 1922-1960 Canadian nickels and between 25% and 40% of the obverses have scratched lines across, many times making an X
Is this something US merchants did in the past? or anyone have any idea why they have been attacted?

<< <i>I also have seen a lot of these with and X on them. It may have to do with the parking meters used at the time, but I really don't know. >>
I've read the same as above. Seen some auction descriptions stating same.
I believe the effect is from a detection pin in the meter scratching the coin as it is deposited in the well. A second line appears when it is re-used in another meter, thus forming the X. Laying multiple coins with this X "side by each" will show different widths to the X.
