$30,000.00 to invest What would you buy?

If I had $30000 to invest to turn over in a year for a good profit, what coin would it be?

Right now, I wouldn't buy any coin as an investment. The market that may still prosper is the "trophy" coin market, but those now cost more than $1 million each so $30,000 isn't going to even get you in the door.

I would invest in my own education or that of my family.

To earn money, I would consult my investment advisor.

    Three possibilities:

    1) Fractional ownership in the next 1913 Liberty nickel or 1804 dollar to come to the market

    2) Load up on the next "limited edition" mint product. I think that game will work for a little while longer

    3) If you are a gold bull, MS-64/5 Saints

Edit: I do not buy coins as investments and do not necessarily recommend doing so with a $30k windfall. If an extra $30k dropped in my lap, I might buy a $5k coin and save/invest the rest in more traditional vehicles.

I'd put it in a high yield savings account if I wanted easy access to it. If I knew I wouldnt need it for a while, a CD would be the way to go. You'll be hard pressed to find a coin right now that will yield 5% right now when you concider the cost of selling.

*Dealer- they have a mark-back. You'd be fortunate to find one that has a place to go for it for a quick a 10% profit. So the coin would have to grow 15%+ in a best case sell to a dealer scenario. And that assumes you paid average market.
*Major Auction- You're going tp pay a commission between 10-15%.
*Ebay- there went 2-6% depending on if they use paypal.
*Direct sell to a collector- How many collectors do you know that are going to want your coin(s) well enough to spend 30+ grand on them when you get ready to sell.

There will most likely be more coins that dont grow in true worth 5% over the next year than do. I think investing in coins right now with the expectation of insuring the best return possible is not the best financial move right now, their are other venues at this point that are far more suited for that purpose. Even so, if I had to pick the best place for the money right now, I'd go with $50 proof platinum eagles for a long term hold.

if I HAD to buy a coin, I'd get half ownership of a decent or full ownership of a less-than-stellar 1792 half disme

If I HAD to invest $30,000 in coins and only for one year? I would buy 65 2003 First in flight $10 gold commemoratives in uncirculated condition. They bid at $460 each right now, I see them bringing $700 each a year from now. The mintage is a little over 10,000 and it hasn't caught up with the rest of the scarce gold commems yet price wise.

Or....buy 10 Library of congress bimetal $10 plat & gold commems. Mintage is under 7,000. These have gone threw the roof and are bid at 2,950 each, but still have plenty of price rising potenial.

A good 1 year profit in coins would be to break even, so I would consider a MS 1892-S or 1895-O Morgan.

The four coin platinum sets 2006,2007, and 2008 will be sort of special.

"In 2006, the United States Mint embarks on a new, three - year series titled The Foundations of American Democracy. For the year beginning in 2006, the reverse design will feature an image emblematic of one of the three institutional foundations of our American democracy -- the Legislative, the Executive and the Judicial branches. The new series of designs will be launched in the order the branches of government appear in the U.S. Constitution."

It depends on how much you know about coins and how hard you're willing to work. If you're sharp enough, you should go to coin shows and auctions, buy good deals, resell for quick profits, and turn your money a few times over the course of the year. If you're not that sharp or you're just plain lazy, it's unrealistic to expect a good profit in a year and I'd recommend against even trying.

With that kind of money, I would buy some nice double eagles, both Libs and Saints.
