ripkenintheminors, is this one real or fake?

I read your descriptions of real vs. fake WBTV Ripkens and this appears to be on the up and up. Your opinion?

    What he said.

I'll be keeping a very close watch on this auction. Not that I plan to buy it, but this is one of those special auctions that you want to keep a close watch on. If the remaining cards in the set are in that good of condition, it would be an amazing set to pick up and add to a registry. For the record, no copy of the WBTV Ripken has ever graded higher than an 8 (18 have been graded by PSA/BGS/SGC) and I am really surprised that the seller did not at least have the Ripken card graded before going live with the auction. Cal does have a second appearance in the set, a team photo card. My blue Ripken graded SGC 84 (bought it that way) and the remaining cards are worthy of being graded, which is pretty hard to find for a set that was shrink wrapped over 26 years ago. The total production was 1,400 sets that were given out to kids 14 and under. However, an interview with someone with the O's in 1980 suggested that "hundreds and hundreds" of sets were thrown in the trash after the game. That card is Cal's second rarest issue and is still undervalued IMHO. Having the complete set only makes it a better addition.

Good luck to everyone planning to go after it!

Generally speaking, the WBTV card should really be purchased as part of a complete set. It was given out as a complete set and if someone has the Ripken, they really should also have the 'common' cards that go with it. The fact that this eBay seller has the complete set is clue # 1 that it's legit (no crook would counterfeit the whole set). The Orange bordered Police set card of Ripken is a different story since they were given to kids one & two at a time & they were not distributed in set form.

  • Additional pictures of the Ripken and set cards have been posted as well. The word of the day is wow.

  • Ripken, just out of curiosity ... what do the other cards in that set go for? I realize there's nowhere near the demand for them as for the Ripken but they're still pretty damn rare, right? Anyone else in the set make it to the Majors?

    Thanks

    Arthur
  • There are actually 2 cards of Ripken in the set when you consider that there is a team card. Another notable player in the set would be John Shelby, who played 11 seasons in the major leagues. Don Welchel is another player that made it to the majors. You also have a notable in Jimmy Williams. I'm not too up on the specifics of what happened to everyone (at least not yet) in the set.

In regards to cost, I have personally only seen 1 complete sold sold online. Since the set was sold with the Ripken, it's hard to say what the cards would sell for in a lot without the Ripken.

I saw a set sold on eBay without Ripken that went for $200-250....The manager Jimmy Williams is not be confused with the 'Jimy' Williams the one-time coach of Atlanta & manager in Boston.

  • Wow, this has been a great week to pick up Ripken minor league cards. The prices have been unreal.

In addition to the WBTV set selling, a BVG 6 sold for $529.00. The card had the following subgrades: Centering (9.5), Corners (5), Edges (7.5), Surface (8.5). I wish the prices were this cheap when I picked up my WBTV set.
