Just ordered one wax box each of 1980 and 1982 Topps Football From BBCEx (UPDATED)

...anybody familiar with busting this stuff?

I've not opened any older football, sans a few 84T racks and a couple 82 Cellos. Both had weird "dents" on the top of the packs and the cards had major damage. ie. completely ungradeable. In fact, I didn't even open football wax when I was kid until 1985. image

I figured with the solid prices being realized on PSA 9 examples of the Simms, Lott, Munoz and LT rc's, plus my need for them all in PSA 9 or better, I'd give it a whirl.

Anyone have any thoughts? Anybody need anything aside from the few rookies I'm hoping to pull for my registries?

  • I wish you luck on those '82s. Those suckers are TOUGH to find well-centered. I don't have any experience with the 80s but I opened more than a box (from BBCE image) of the '82 a little while back. For some reason the T/B centering is impossible on the key cards.

Crap. Not what I wanted to hear.

I will post scans, hopefully will have them by the end of the week. Then I'll rip away!

Look at it this way, envoy .... if you pull a beautifully centered version of one of those cards you're better off than most of the rest of us with the product! Either way, you're bound to pull at least one each of the key cards and a LT/Lott RC is still an LT/Lott RC, no?

Enjoy the ripping. I know I did, even with the off-centered cards. image

I opened 4 vending boxes of the 1980; Walter Payton is very tough. Simms can often be off t/b. Dorsett seemed to always be perfectly centered. Haven't gotten around to sending them in yet - but vending was ok quality - mostly 8's with a few 9's I would suspect.

  • Envoy,

We talked earlier about the 82. Your Landeta and Brazile are on the way. I am interested in any 1980 Cowboys also that you think are 9's or more.

    Thanks,

I'll look for the 80 Donovan also...

I have a monster box full of 1980 fb that I ripped from wax and racks a few years ago.

Is PSA still so tough on 1980 FB? A few years back I had a large quantity of nice wax & rack cards I thought would do well, but most came back as 8's. I checked the pop report and a shockingly low number of 9's had been recorded. Unfortunately not many were collecting the 8's.

Actually, 58% of all the 1980 FB cards submitted have graded 9 or higher. There just aren't a lot of cards that have been submitted.

    edited to add:

    Here are some quick metrics:

year-># cards submitted->% of cards that graded 9 or higher

    1980 5746 58%
    1981 14824 31%
    1982 10099 50%
    1983 10399 54%
    1984 37279 27%
    1985 14969 39%
    1986 24592 20%

Well I got my boxes last night. The 82 box had the "X" on it, the 80 box did not.

Boxes and packs were in wonderful condition, cards were in wonderful condition. I couldn't have been happier...unless I had actually pulled a few of the bigger cards which I was really searching for.

I'll post some scans when I get home from work tonight.

    Here's a quick recap
    1980 Topps - 36x .25 cent Packs
Fun to open, most cards were about 60/40 centering LR or TB. Some were better, some were worse but on average I would say that's close. The corners and edges were great on just about every card. The gum stains are not going to be removed.
The wax stains on the front of the cards were pretty easily removed with pantyhose so no worries there. The only Simms I got was the top card and it had some wax on it but it came off pretty easily. I also had a nice Largent on the top but the centering keeps it from being gradeable. I did get the majority of the cards I needed or was looking for upgrades of. (Giles, Simms, Cromwell, Harrah, Chandler) Did not get an Ottis Anderson or Walter Payton however.

    1982 Topps - 36x .30 cent packs
Another fun one to open. Pulled 2 Munoz rc's (OC T/B) , Freeman McNeal (very nice, maybe a 9?), 2 Everson Walls (both OC T/B). Also got a couple of the Montana stickers, another Wilder and Green for my Bucs set, 2 Walter Payton's (both nice) and 2 Eddie/Walter Payton cards as well as a couple IA Lott, Taylor, Dorsett and Montana cards. All but the Lott will be submitted. I did not get a Lott, Lawrence Taylor or Collinsworth RC in the box which was disappointing. All in the cards were NM-MT shaped which I pretty much expected. The better cards, as an earlier poster pointed out, were OC Top to Bottom... The Freeman McNeal being the only well centered RC I was in need of.
Again, wax stains and gum stains were prevelent but the wax stains were easily removed. The Gum Stains, in many cases, were so bad they actually disfigured the card. On the 1980 wax box the stains were just a dark brown and from the front of the card, you couldn't even tell. However, on the '82's there were almost no cards that touched the gum that were salvageable. The cards actually had pits, dents, puckers, lumps and staining all over the front and back of the card. Some were worse than others but not a single card was worth keeping from the back of the pack. (or top is more appropriate I guess...I opened them face down) image

Luckily few were of any importance, the only card that I was bummed about having a wicked gum stain was a Leaders card of Stabler and Montana, the front of which was actually quite nice.

Overall a fun break and I feel I got more out of this than most modern boxes I've broken in the last few years. $200 well spent in my book. If anyone has any set needs or team wants, let me know. I won't be getting rich, or probably even getting my money back out of these but the fun of ripping was well worth it. This was another great experience with Steve Hart @ BBCE.

Oh and for the two of you that requested the Cowboys and Packers cards, I've pulled them all out for you.

Here are 4 of the Donovans I found. I only made it through about half the monster box of 80's I had and had 6. Here's the best 4. I think 2 have a shot at a 9.

There are a few '81's that are quite nice. The Montana IA and McNeil (oops I spelled it wrong earlier) are very nice as well. I grabbed some of the HOF'ers, I'm going to measure them up and see what the centering really measures out to. Sometimes it can be a little deceiving so I'll see if it's as bad, or as good, as it looks on some of these. I noticed there were several people doing 80 and 82 team sets so I pulled out all the cards from those teams, if there is anything nice I'll probably submit those as well. Other than that, I have no plans for the rest so if anyone needs any set fillers lmk.
  • I love the 1980 football cards. My collecting is of All Stars and All Pros. I have been working on the 1976-1981 All Pros pretty hard. 1980 has been a tough nut to crack since there are so few graded examples of some of the All Pros. I believe there are 47 in all from the 1980 set and I have 34 of them. I have the 1/1 Bob Young and Mike Pruitt.

I have bought most of the cards already graded off Ebay. For raw, I bought a few complete sets listed as NM/MT and that really didn't yield a whole lot in the way of submittable All Pro cards. Some of the cards like Toni Fritsch and Russ Washington I expected to be real tough, but I have had a tough time finding nice examples of some of the more popular players like Largent, Ham and Rashad as well.

Any help with the remaining 13 would be much appreciated. I have 8's, 9's and the two 10's. The thing that I find most often plauges the cards I got is bad centering. I'll take a nicely centered 7 or 8 over a poorly centered 9 any day of the week.

The 13 cards I need to complete the set are: Rashad, Largent, Washington, Dave Pear, Mark Moseley, Marvin Powell, Gary Johnson, Toni Fritsch, Richard Bishop, Doug English, Louis Wright, Pat Donovan and Jack Ham.

I'd be interested in a nice 1980 Lester Hayes - if anyone pulls one.
