Raw 1809 Bust Half ... please grade and attribute! GRADE POSTED

I'm very excited about this Bustie, which I got from Dick Osburn. Hopefully it will holder at PCGS (I know, I know...the whole thing about holders, but I've got a registry set and I can't get it in there unless it's holdered). Also, I'm trying something new, I'm reducing the sizes of my images and uploading them directly to this site, rather than use a photo hosting service.
Thanks for looking! Your input is very much appreciated.

I love the overall look of your new acquisition. I would grade it XF40. Dick Osburn is an excellent dealer and has such nice coins. I have the Overton book but won't be able to see it until the weekend so I am sure someone will attribute if well before I can get a chance.

    Congratulations on the purchase.

a fascinating die variety, with the marks above the eagle purportedly misplaced dentils (?) but apparently too V shaped and straight-line for that, IMO

Looks every bit of EF and holderable, to me

Nice coin,I like those stars!Like Baley said,I wonder what caused those marks above the eagle's head.Overton

describes them as "a row of uniform, pointed ,segments clash marked between scroll and eagles head."

I wonder if its more likely die damage similar to the spiked -chin 1804 1/2 cent.?image

    Oh yeah,O-102,R1image

It looks like a very nice O-102.
OBV 2 - star 13 close to curl.
Rev A-s2 - with "a row of uniform, pointed segments clash marked between the scroll and eagle's head." (from Overton)
    Golf time!!

I'm going to go minority report on you and wager it could slab as AU50. I think it will boil down to how much luster remains, a tough thing to tell from the pic. The strike on those things could be unbelievably crappy, and that coin has fantastic detail for an XF.

That's a very nice O. 102. Great original look. I would think it might hit AU50 - great detail and it appears to have some decent luster. I've been looking at Dick Osburn's catalog considering a purchase so it's great to see an example of his stock. Congrats! It's a nice pickup.

I like the look of this one from what I can tell. Congratulations! A tough date to find with stars and left wing facing struck as nice as yours.
I'd say it's in the XF range and would guess that might be where pcgs will be at. I've noticed on darker Bust halves pcgs seems to go a bit low on grade at times. You can always take a sharpie pen after they grade it and write your own grade on it.image

  • I'll say ef45 shot at au 50 these are known for a weak strike and I see alot of detail ,no matter what it grades it is a very nice coin and one I would be proud to own.

Hey Mike- I like 09's that look like yours.
I think it is an XF coin that would probably slab as a 40 at PCGS because the luster looks gone.
How does the edge lettering look?
Some coins are just plain "Interesting"
  • If my memory serves me correctly, I think Dick described it as an XF40+.

That is a bomber coin for the assigned grade.

I'm gonna go with possibly AU 50. As was mentioned...the strike on the obverse is really poor on a lot of the halves as in 1808 and 1809's.

You have a well struck bustie there so that should help the grade. I really like it. Hopefully it has some nice lustre too!

    Nice looking Bustie!image

PCGS should give it XF40, or if you get lucky, XF45. Detail is sufficient, but it appears to lack luster.
I collect Capped Bust series by variety in PCGS AU/MS grades.

Cute cat. He looks like an Oscar too.
  • fyi it graded at pcgs as an AU 50.

(maybe the luster, which doesn't show up in the photo and is pretty much c/w an au 50-55 raised this lady to the AU 50)

Doesn't surprise me at all. I didn't see this thread the first time, so when I first saw the coin just now, my guess was EF45, but PQ. I can see how PCGS would bump it to an AU...
  • A very nice 1809. way to go, Mike.
