Yes, in 1986 I was a 10-year old Phillies Phan and I was taught to hate the Mets and Yankees.

I am actively buying MIKE SCHMIDT gem mint baseball cards. Also looking for any 19th century cabinets of Philadephia Nationals. Please PM with additional details.

I'm with you, I remember watching the games on WOR, McCarver and Kiner, it was a magical season.

I get "goose bumps" thinking of that season and post season. I was a kid and when the Mets were down to their last out in game six I had my head under the bed praying. Whatever I said worked and the ball found a nice hole between Billy Buckners legs image

  • I lived 10 minutes from Shea when that happened. It was a very exciting time here in NY.
  • Probably a top 3 all time greatest sports memory for me! I was 13!
  • Is that the year Keith Hernandez spit on Kramer and Newman lol.

    That was too funny! image
  • As a Cardinal fan, I hated that Mets team, but we got you back in 87.

And if Whitey Herzog hadn't hated Keith Hernandez, you might never have won in 86

Thank goodness the Mets won Game 6 against the Astros because if they went to Game 7, they would have had to face Mike Scott, who was unhittable. I remember the Mets were all psyched out over Mike Scott allegedly scuffing the ball.

    I remember that too!

I remember they had a TV camera on the Mets dugout in game 4, which was won by Mike Scott, and they showed the Mets flipping baseballs among themselves looking to see how he was scuffing the balls. I'm a Met fan, but I was really scared of Mike Scott in 1986.

Was at UMass where riots broke out after game 6. Was in Newsweek the following week as race riots, but it was really just Mets fans vs. Sox fans. Kooky.

If any of you Mets fans are interested, I have a press pass from the 86 WS - real fresh and a neat piece. Looking for $20 delivered. PM me for a scan.

The '86 Met team was probably the last team with any kind of discernable personality. (Old time baseball, if you will.) Today's teams are too image conscious.

Has anyone read the book "The Bad Guys Won"? It's a pretty open and honest account of that team's character and season.
  • STEM is Mets spelled backwards.

    That was a fun read.
  • I lived in Flushing at the time. Right off Frannie Lou Blvd and would bike to Shea every chance I got. My neighbor worked at the stadium and my friends and I would skip school (when MLB used to play day games) and sit in the nose blleds for free!!!!!!!!

What school did you go to?
  • Phenomenal season. Magical.

I won a video from Gatorade in the late 80s that showed highlights of that WS. That game 6 still gives me goosebumps.

Check out this WS Mets card in the attachment.

Sorry, the magic for me was the 1986 Football Giants winning the Super Bowl.

I remember Game 6 of the WS. My friend and I were in Atlantic City and we were watching the game at a bar (mind you I was 20 at the time so I had to sneak in everywhere). We missed our bus back to Philadelphia and I saw the end of the game on a B&W Watchman TV set that the bus dispatcher was watching.

I kicked my roommate out of my dorm room for WS game 7 as I wanted to watch the Giants play Monday night football. It was my TV so he found another place to watch the game.

Yes, 1986 was a magical time.

Getting back to Mike Scott, I don't think he was ever the same after the '86 season, so maybe there was merit to him scuffing baseballs. I thought Game 6 of the 'Stros-Mets series was phenomenal that year...
