Asleep at the wheel -- missed a 1794 large cent

This coin caught my eye the other day on eBay 1794 Large Cent s65 PCGS VF 25 -- I've been on the lookout for this type for a few months now. This one appealed to me and was in the right price and grade range....

Having not completed my research before placing a bid and thinking it wasn't going to be auctioned until sometime this week, I arrived at my computer this evening only to discover the auction has already completed and the winning bid was a few hundred bucks less than you were willing to pay. image

Has this happened to you?

Did feeding yourself numismatic prozac like "it wasn't meant to be" or "that coin really wasn't that nice" or "another opportunity will present itself" help? image

Kicking myself....Mike

That coin looks especially choice; I feel your pain. A similar experience happened to me and I rationalized that the winning bidder likely had put in such a high bid that I would have not obtained the coin even if I had my act together. It is the best way to proceed in this circumstance.

I saw it too. It's nice and since you didn't win it I can say that I like mine better.

BUt here is a better one:

I assume it is priced a little high since it didn't sell. I didn't look it up but I was tempted.

  • It is quite nice, and I'm glad to read that that is the preferred color, as my pcgs vf30 Head of 1794 matches it plus has some blue on the obverse.

So, the positives are that you have the money to buy this, that's good. And if, like me, you love the search/chase, it is still on. Good luck!
