Needing Help with a new set!

Hey All,

Basically, I'm starting a new set. So I'm wondering if anyone has any idea of the set that I should start. I'm looking for a baseball set b/n 1960-80. If anyone has an opinion on which would be the easiest/nicest set to start that would be great. Oh yeah, give me some examples if you have any...

    Hi Dave and Happy Thanksgiving!

My choice would be the 63F BB set.

It's only 66 cards and does have some nice stars.

The nice thing is that the set is affordable in 8 and totally affordable in 7.

The hard card in 8 is the checklist #67.

I like the design and there are some nice players in the set - like Clemente, Koufax, Drysdale e.g.

I'm currently at 55% and here's my set in the Registry which has pics of all the cards I've picked up so far. I am trying to keep the cost at around 70% SMR - which I've done so far - it will get tougher as I attempt to complete the set - I'm in no hurry and have been working on it for over 2 yrs.

Can I ask what 70% of SMR adds up to? I've been wanting to pick up a nice Willie Mays for my collection, but the prices are always a bit steep for my taste.

I don't have the Mays and not sure about the competition.

With the star cards, I'm willing to take a fairly nice centered card to take advantage of a good buy.

    Don Drysdale - SMR 175$ - I paid 102.50$
    Warren Spahn - SMR 150$ - I paid 82$
    Roberto Clement - SMR 325$ - I paid 218.50$
    Bob Gibson - SMR 175$ - I paid 108.55$
    Orlando Cepeda - SMR 90$ - I paid 63.89$

The SP in the set is Joe Adcock - SMR 300$ - I paid 172.50$

If these cards were superbly centered and 8 - they would most like go for SMR and above IMO.

edit: check my above post for the link to my set with pics in the registry for examples of the quality of the centering.

That's a pretty wide field there, especially when you qualify it by saying easiest or nicest.
Nicest is tough to tell - everybody has their own favorite within that 20 year span, and you would have to determine which is yours.
As far as easiest, the 1961 Golden Press set is pretty easy to put together. It's a colorful 33 card set, fairly abundant in top grades and pretty affordable. I currently have two sets on the registry; here's the second one which I'm linking because it's the one that has scans.

  • Dave,

You're casting a very wide net....

What budget are you playing with?
What matters most to you in the set?
Are you concerned by large set size?

My advice would be to look at each year and pick your favorite. In the end, you can pretty much chase any set within that time period --- and depending on budget --- go for the PSA range (mid-grade or high-grade) that you can afford.

My favorite set is 1960 Topps. A great year historically for baseball (Mazeroski WS hr for Pitt), a ton of HOF's at both end (Musial), middle (Mantle), and beginning (Yaz) of career, and a unique and appealing set design.

Here is the Mantle I own for this set. I love this card.

EDITED TO ADD: For fun, I took a look at all the HOF's in this set. Here's the list:
    Early Wynn
    Ernie Banks
    Brooks Robinson
    Sparky Anderson
    Whitey Ford
    Al Kaline
    Bill Mazeroski
    Bob Gibson
    Nellie Fox
    Carl Yastzemski (RC)
    Willie Mays
    Harmon Killebrew
    Al Lopez MGR
    Casey Stengel MGR
    Luis Aparicio
    Stan Musial
    Robin Roberts
    Hank Aaron
    Richie Ashburn
    Willie McCovey (RC)
    Roberto Clemente
    Red Schoendienst
    Sandy Koufax
    Mickey Mantle
    Hoyt Wilhelm
    Eddie Mathews
    Warren Spahn
    Orlando Cepeda
    Don Drysdale
    Yogi Berra
    Frank Robinson
    Duke Snider
    Jim Bunning
    - Building these sets:
    ------- 1960 Topps Baseball PSA 8+
    ------- 1985 Topps Hockey PSA 9+

In the same vein as Mike's suggestion of the '63 Fleer set, you might want to have a look at some of the 70's Kellogg's sets. They're relatively small and usually contain only stars and near stars. In spite of that, they're generally rather affordable.

    Nice affordable small set.
