Has Anyone Ever Cherrypicked an 1894/894 Indian Head Cent?

RampageRampage Posts: 9,507 ✭✭✭✭✭
I picked one up yesterday from an antique shop's box of IHCs for $1.50. I would grade it a VG8. Tried to scan it, but the image came out too dark, so it was not worth posting. Come to think of it, this thread is worthless without images. image Maybe someone can post an image of what it looks like. Anyway, I was pretty excited about it.

Yes, at a local auction I was bidding on a page of 20 Indian cents, all were 1894 and 1909 in Good. I noted an 1894/1894 in the group and decided to get the lot if it didn't go too high. So I bought the lot for $25 or so. When I got it home, I discovered there were 2 1894/1894's in the group. So I would say I did OK on the lot.

Good deal for sure. image I usually like to dig through the box of a couple hundred IHCs when I visit the shop, because usually, there are at least one or two of the semi-key dates (1866 to 1872) in the box. They are not in the greatest shape, but for $1.50 each, you can't go wrong I think. The last time I was in there (several months ago), I picked out an 1871 in AG and an 1868 in poor shape with some corrosion. Again, not a great coin, but certainly worth more than $1.50 (maybe $5.00 give or take) to fill someone's coin book (maybe a YN or someone).

I've searched on-and-off for this overdate for the past few years and haven't come up w/ anything for my efforts.

Over time, about 40 or 50. Until about 10 years ago, if you were diligent, your odds of finding one at a medium size or larger show were better than 50/50.

Probably half a dozen or so, for a while it seemed that I wasn't finding them, they were finding me. I also once cherried a low-grade Snow-2 (9 and 4 in denticles) which is a much scarcer coin. Here's a pic of a Snow-1 that I sent to PCGS to fill out an order, which graded VG8.

As AU58 says, they were fairly easy to find until around 10 years ago. I'm sure I cherried over 25. Not so easy to find nowadays.
  • How much are they worth?

I CHERRIED ONE IN ABOUT FINE CLEANED A FEW MONTHS BACK AT A COIN SHOW. PAID $8 FOR IT! EVEN IF WASN'T THE RPD, 1.50 FOR A VG 1894 IS A GOOD PRICE.

Yes about 5 years ago. I sold it for $50. It was in VG as well.
  • never picked a 1894/894 but I have had my share of good IHC junk box finds.

About 5 years years ago there was a local coin shop that had an IHC junk box. I would always go through it. I do not want to say that this guy was too lazy to look through what he had, but he had thrown so many semi-keys into this box it was unbelievable. In the end I think I picked up about ten 1872's and many other great dates for only $1 a piece.
