Uncirculated W Platinum Eagles -- Swan or Ugly Duckling?

I ordered a few of these a while back. This "W" Platinum Eagle thing has all the looks of a mintage anomaly in progress.

But there's one thing that creeps me out, even though I've bought into them, is that although I love the Platinum Eagle series in general -- especially the Proofs that change reverse designs every year -- I've found that it's this year's design I like the least, and that's what will be on the "W" uncirculated coins.

One reason for this might be that I've only ever seen the coin in person once, and that's on a 1/10 oz proof. The coin is so small and the reverse design so busy it's hard to even see what's going on without magnification. Perhaps on a large 1 oz coin it might look really nice.

So, I'd just like to see some opinions.

For those familiar with these coins, do you think the "W" uncirculated platinums will be:

1. Ugly
2. Cool
3. So ugly that they're cool.
4. If it's really rare nobody will really care.

And, if you really love this year's design, do tell so I'll know that there are actually people out there who like the 2006 proof reverse.

I always like the look of my 1/10 oz proof coins in my collection.....

The burnished unc coins never do anything for me (I prefer old style silver unc eagles).....

I want one of these coins for my collection however.....

I've been buying Platinum Proofs since 1999. I like the big one ounce Coins the best because I can actually see them with no eye strain. image I was lucky enough to order 2 - 2004 one ounce proofs. I really like the way they've gone up in value - it just adds to the joy of ownership.

Starting in 2003 I've been buying a few BU Coins just because I like to BUY BUY BUY. The 2003 BU was the last of the "reverse Proof" BU's and it's actually very interesting to look at. Starting in 2004, the BU's took on the current matte appearance. It's ok but just not as nice as the reverse finish.

For years, the Mint has received inquiries about the BU Coins and their standard reply has always been that they only sell the proof Coins. This year, they have solved the problem by adding the current W-minted BU Coins.

Have I ordered any? Yes, I have been buying Platinum Coins since 1999 - I see no reason not to buy the current BU W-minted issue. Given the hype surrounding all the anniversary sets and the heavy promotion by certain people on these boards, I expect to see a very large final mintage. It would be nice to see a limited issue, but it's not looking good.

My advice - if you like them - buy them. If you are hoping for profit.... well.... GOOD LUCK. Hope all works out well for you.image

I did not get one of the 1/10 oz coins.....

Went to order one and it was already gone and have been talking about it in another thread.....

Debating on what I am going to do, possibly ordering a 1/4 oz coin.....

The reverse of this year's coin is one of my favorites. We so many, many many eagles in various poses that I find this one refreshing. The eagles in this coin are actually in the background. It looks very official, traditional, and monumental to me.

That is a really nice reverse.....

Most of the platinum coins have nice reverses, the obverse I don't really care for however.....

Worst of the 3 bullion coins in my opinion.....

Well, if you want to talk about the obverse, I happen to have a photo of that too.

I respectfully disagree with you. I like the statue of liberty very much. I'm reminded of the song by Toby Keith:

    ...And the Statue of Liberty
    Started shaking her fist.
    And the eagle will fly
    And there's gonna be hell
    When you hear Mother Freedom
    Start ringing her bell
And it'll feel like the whole wide world is raining down on you
Ahhh Brought to you Courtesy of the Red White and Blue."
