Let me give you a real estate lesson, since obviously you need one.
I, along with over 30% of the population, are "renters by choice". Most of us, including myself, owned a home in the past and sold for whatever reason. Some are empty nesters, some relocated, some saw a housing bubble and put their equity in better positions, some travel a ton and don't want the hassels, and some are a combination.
People who shouldn't qualify for a home are buying like crazy, which is artificially increasing home values. When the bubble bursts (or slowly deflates), I'll be there with cash in hand. Some people have different opinions and I could very well be wrong. However, I'm putting my money where my mouth is
I miss the tax write-off but there are plenty of legit deductions out there. Don't mind living in a bachelor pad, with new appliances, gorgeous pools (along with the women who lay out by said pools), and hassle free maintenance until the time is right.
In regards to "the slums of downtown houston", yeah, whatever you say. Sucks to be a walking distance from MMP and the Toyota Center with Reliant only being a 10 minute drive. And I hate it when numerous bars, fantastic restaurants, and happin'in places to be are right down the street.
