ALERT! David Lawrence auction #115 lot 4232 Bust Half 1814/3 wrong enlarged pictures

I just noticed this attribution error made by PCGS, and not caught by David Lawrence. The correct attribution of the enlarged pictures is 1814 O-104a R2, worth a fourth as much as the overdate 1814/3. PCGS calls it worth $600 compared with the overdate at $2,500!image

David Lawrence was notified a few minutes ago by email. I hope they quickly make the correction in their auction listing.

By the way, the 1814 O-104 WITHOUT the cracks is R4.

Edited to make update. PCGS holder label is correct. It is the enlarged pictures, without the holder, that are of another coin.

  • Mozin,

Recheck your images and you will see that it is a 14/3, but with the wrong obverse substituted in the enlarged version. I'd be concerned about the porous surfaces of the 14/3. They appear corroded.

Also note on the previous 1814 O.102, an obverse die crack thru 4. I had never heard of nor seen this before. Anyone interested in die states of 1814, a fascinating subject, has a prize at hand.

    slumlord98,

You are correct, DL simply used the wrong enlarged obverse. I never bothered to look at the coin in the holder, only the enlarged obverse and reverse pictures without the holder. DL did not make the correction as of this hour.

I agree the surface on the 1814/3 reverse looks to possibly be corroded. Not a coin I would want.

<< <i>To be fair and accurate, I'd recommend an edit of this thread's title. >>

Good suggestion. It has been edited, and an update placed in the original post. Actually, both of the enlarged pictures of the coin without the holder are of the O-104a, the wrong coin for the listing.
