Has this Morgan been cleaned?

Any thoughts on the grade would be appreciated too.

    I'd also say no.

The front part of the cheek, just behind the mouth/nose, looks rubbed, so I'm going to say AU58.
    When in doubt, don't.

i would say no also, and also grade it AU58. 1896's are usually well struck but a lot of times do not have great luster. Bob

Dipped, maybe, but if so, not harshly cleaned.

I wouldn't call it "cleaned" in terms of a market grade/price- looks perfectly acceptable to me.

I would call it MS63 if it isn't a slider like the previous responders think.

  • at least not improperly... it might have been dipped, but it is market acceptable

MS62, from the pics. I do not think that is a rub behind the mouth, just a natural luster variation like seen on the definitely not rubbed DO of DOLLAR and below the tail feathers.

    Dipped but not cleaned. MS63

Jim, I think lordmarcovan hit this one square on the head in his assessment regarding the grade. Also, if dipped, it was completely unnecessary.

It may have had some PVC that was removed. Has that look.

However you call it, over-dipped, lightly cleaned, circulated for a period, or a combination of those, the luster is impaired somewhat.
    AU58+ to MS61

  • Great, I was not sure. I received 10 morgans and peace dollars from my parents (mom is 86) and they have had them for years.
    Thanks for the info.
