NNC Crackouts

Has anyone had any success in cracking out NNC slabbed coins and submitting them for regrade with PCGS or NGC?

There are literally 1,000's of these slabs floating around E-Bay right now. Not just Centsles anymore, either. Others have gotten into the NNC game.

Most of the stuff looks like crap, cleaned or grossly overgraded. However, there may be some that could merit a closer look.

  • Right after they started appearing on eBay, I purchased two of them. An NNC MS62 common date seated lib quarter, dipped but lustrous, with average strike, came back PCGS MS62! It cost me AU money. The other, an NNC MS62 183(something) half dollar, also purchased for AU money, and also dipped but with nice luster, came back AU58. I was able to crack the NNC holders by hand. I sold both of the coins when I lost my taste for dipped coins. I made money on the quarter, and came out around even on the half.

1000's of NNC coins are floating around Ebay not just from Centsles but from others because he has sold 1000's of these coins to people who don't know better. Now, for the most part, these buyer are trying to sell these coins and get PCGS and NGC money for them.

I only bought one of them. It is a 1921-D VAM-1P NNC 64. I think it would grade a 63 at either PCGS or NGC. I am just waiting for them to start a more comprehensive variety service. That will come in time. Once Mint products slow down with collector apathy, they'll need something to get coins to come back through again for more fees. The business needs to keep moving. (And this is exactly the kind of service the market needs form them anyway.)

I only bought one coin as well. It was a 1971S Peg Leg IKE (Business Strike) graded MS66 by NNC. I sent it to PCGS and it graded MS63. I bought it for the variety and nothing else. The price was right.

Sure, plenty of NNC coins (and other third world coins) can be cracked out and slabbed by one of the majors. As long as the coin doesn't have problems, it will slab...though likely 2-3 grades lower...
