Question about getting an autograph on a card.

I do not collect autographs and do not know their values related to being on different items. My question is I am going to a local show where Frank Robinson is signing. I collect 57 topps and have a raw version of his RC that would probably be a 5-6 if graded. I only collect 7-8 range cards so it is more like a filler for now. Would it be worth more signed and authenticated opposed to possible graded and sold less the auto. Is there a market for mid range cards with autos??? I personally wouldnt want a auto on a PSA8 type card, but maybe more attractive the lower grade of card. TIA

  • I wouldn't damage his rookie card by getting his autograph on it. I would bite the bullet and either get a photo, ball or bat.

If you want to have an auto on a card ( something I like) get it on a later issue card say from the seventies.

There was once a 52T Mantle auto'ed for sale.

    It looked great!

    If I could afford it...

I can't think of a nicer collection than as complete as possible auto'ed RC HOF set.

This falls in the category of either ya do or ya don't like it.

For economic reasons, I would rather do the RC's in ex condition but hey...if ya got the money? Why not a set with 8s?

    Good luck Dave
Tell us how it goes meeting Robinson and post a pic of the card if ya get the time.

    I think so as well.

There may be a lot of collectors that think that it's not good to get rookie cards signed, but there is a growing section of the hobby that collecting them. As for getting a Frank Robinson Rookie signed, I'd say go for it, but try to get it signed with a fine blue sharpie, as the contrasts on the card tend to obscure most other signatures. I have a blue pen ink signed Robinson Rookie, and it doesn't present well.

It is a matter of personal preference.

I personally wouldnt get his rookie card signed, I would probably pick a very colorful later issue. The Perez-Steele cards look awesome autographed, I cant remember if Frank ever had one though.

Another possibility is to get cards autographed from a significant year in a player's career. For example there was a 1961 Topps Roger Maris auctioned a few months back. In Robinson's case, his 1966 Topps from his Triple Crown year would be good. You could probably find a nice one to get signed and it would obviously cost a lot less than his RC.
