Stolen coins returned to Albany coin shop

Hundreds of collectable coins have been returned to Albany’s Mid-Valley Gems & Jewelry after being stolen two years ago and mysteriously returned this month.
The coins along with watches and jewelry were found inside a backpack along Highway 99E south of Tangent after the Democrat-Herald received an anonymous call telling the paper where the property could be picked up.
On Monday, Albany police returned the 300 to 400 coins that were in the backpack to the business, said owner Steve Wulff. He was still going through the coins and inventorying them on Wednesday.
The jewelry and watches were given to an insurance company that paid the business after the theft.
Wulff never expected to see the stolen property again.
“I thought they were long gone,” he said.
The business was broken into sometime between Oct. 23 and 25, 2004, and more than $60,000 worth of items were stolen, according to a police report.
Albany police detectives said on Wednesday that Sweet Home officers responded Nov. 6, 2004, to a coin store in Sweet Home where a man and woman were trying to sell a large amount of coins.
Those coins were recovered and returned to Mid-Valley Gems & Jewelry, and the man was arrested on an outstanding warrant from Marion County.
No one has ever been charged in connection with the Albany burglary, but Albany detectives are once again actively working on the case.
