Hey, I just noticed eBay's "Want It Now" feature.

It's about time they did that. How long has that been there?

    Want It Now

Apparently you post a wantlist on there and sellers respond with listings.

It's not as hot as I thought at first (no direct, back-n-forth, forum-style communication, apparently), but if somebody clicks "respond" the Sell screen comes up. (Of course eBay has to get their chunk so I guess it would do no good to have people directly involved with each other).

Still, it might help with folks who have something but haven't listed it. Assuming anyone browses the Want-It-Now section. I didn't even notice it before.

Some folks are way too general, posting stuff like "US Coins". Gee, how vague can you get? Ebay warns people posting to be very specific.

    Here's my first posting.

    And my second.

Look, you can even add a small picture to the posts.

One cool thing about it is if you have a specific coin, you could put in the date of the coin you had and browse through folks who were looking for that particular date.

    << <i>Hey Lord,

If you're talkin' about this picture, it ain't a tomb- it's the ruins of the slave hospital at Retreat Plantation, now the site of the Sea Island Golf Club.

    Huh. I wish.

Two years ago, as part of the preparations for the G8 summit, they bulldozed all around those ruins for a new parking lot (though the ruins themselves were not messed with). I wanted SO much to detect there- it pained me to walk through all that lovely naked dirt and see square nails and bits of old pottery and glass lying exposed on the surface, and know that I couldn't hunt it. I asked, but was refused permission. Dang. I just know there were a lot of tasty Bust coins and large cents and Spanish silver on that site. Gold, too, since it's been an upscale golf club since 1928. There is an early photograph taken on the site, of some old geezers hamming it up for the camera and handing each other wads of old large-size currency notes after a round of golf. So the chance of a gold coin are higher there than in a lot of places. And Civil War relics, too- there was a Confederate battery on the grounds early in the war before the Federals landed, I think.

All in all, it would be a dreamy detecting site. But as it is such a ritzy, manicured, high-profile spot today, it's not detectorist-friendly. Maybe one day I will think of the right angle to use in talking to the CEO, whose family owns the resort. My mistake last time was asking the General Manager instead of going to the top.

I bought a few shares of ebay at $26. Other than that, my mom taught me if I can't say somethin' nice, not to say anything at all.

    Happy Thanksgiving....

that image poor turkey <-----( eBay, that is)

I just don't like all their greedy little rules. My biggest problem is that they make banishment a possibility if I sell on the side to repeat buyers. It just makes a guy hate ebay image all the more.
all profit is gone to ebay , pay pal, the post office and office depot, plus my ISP, phone, fax, and electricity to run it all. The fun is MAKING money, not losing it.

...see lordmarco ? that's what the "WANT IT NOW" feature did to me. I sell enough per month to keep power seller status and that's for a tax write-off against my profits image LOL

Well, there are a number of reasons some folks call it "Greedbay", I suppose.

"Want It Now" should have a keyword search that alerts you when someone lists something that matches your keyword. As it is now, it depends on sellers to search it for it to work, and sellers are too busy to search it. So it's nearly worthless IMO.

Yeah, but it's only recently been linked into the "My eBay" page. Before then, it was darn hard to find.

I tried putting up a few "WIN" items, but only ended up getting spammed for stuff that was completely unrelated to what I was looking for.

WIN is missing one piece -- linkage to auction listings for sellers. If I'm a seller, and I'm listing an item, it might be nice to see if there are any WIN hits. Then I could email those folk and let them know that I'm listing what they're looking for.

Saved Searches have been much more successful for me in finding stuff for my collection.

That's what Saved Searches do. WIN is supposed help sellers find you; Saved Searches help you find sellers -- they're kinda opposites in that regard. But the way WIN works is currently suboptimal.

I already got an email from my WIN post for 1901 Brit Empire coins. But the guy was offering 1901 pennies, which I don't need.

Regular sellers maybe. It is just great as a set up for a nice little racket though.

You are right Coxe.... it does have it's place.
The problem with coins though, people usually WANT IT NOW, for a lot less than what a guy's got in it.
