Sorry if this is a dupe thread about NFL.network...

...I did a search and didn't find any previous discussions on it.

A guy at work (who's a KC Chief fan -- argh!) happened to asked me if I was going to watch the Broncos-Chiefs on NFL.network. I said, "No..." and at the same time we both said, "...I'm boycotting NFL.network's games." I hadn't even checked into the cost of watching games, but he had. He said it's $5.00 to sign up and $5.00 a month -- cheaper than what I would've guessed.

Anyway, is anyone else watching, not watching, or even "boycotting", NFL.network??

Just curious.

Thanks...

[edited to add:] Oops. I guess I should've checked on the Sports Talk forum before posting here. Think I'll do that next.

[and later:] Nope. Nothing on it in the Sports Talk forum...

[and later:] Thanks for the correction, TnB!

The NFL Network is part of my DirecTV package. That game looks like fun and I will be right there. (I prefer to watch most sports at night, for whatever reason, so this is right up my alley.)

    I agree...212 is great.

Why boycott the nfl network? Not their fault your cable provider doesn't want to pony up the money to pick them up. Get yourself directtv and boycott your sad cable company for not being smart and trying to play hardball with the NFL...and get the sunday ticket package while you're at it.

My cable company includes it, and I think listening to Bryant Gumbel call the game was some of the worst football I have watched in a long time.

Did anyone else find his voice very irritating?

    zef,
gumbel is annoying. however i live in st. louis and what kind of quality announcers am i getting this year? the rams have lost five in a row and their remaining games are vs. san francisco, arizona, then the mnf boys come in, finish up oakland, washington and minnesota. I am guessing four weeks of Brian Baldingerimage

many of the regulars on this board use the phrase "buy the card, not the holder". let me amend. "watch the game for your team, not the announcer".

I Got the NFL network for these games....I AM PAYING THE CABLE COMPANY....then i find out when the game starts that MY NFL NETWORK wont be showing it...because insight communications decided NOT to pay the NFL for the games....so they are charging and not paying...THIS SUCKS...bottom line....i payed and didnt get to watch it.

Could not agree more. Not only is his voice annoying, so is the way he calls a game. Not a great combo. I never thought I'd take Cris Collinsworth hands down over anyone, but it has happened!

  • Lothar, I was stuck in the same boat as you were, I turned it over to watch the game the other night and I see a scroll bar saying that my local cable company did not choose to carry the game. Bummer.

Bryant Gumbel is an easy target to be sure, but I can come up with a dozen worst play by play guys in football, baseball and basketball.

If I was paying for cable and not receiving the NFL Network, I'd be making my feelings known to the cable company. I'd much rather trade 50 channels I pay for but never watch for the NFL Network.

    OK, they would be...?

Some that come to mind are:

EDIT! How could I forget to list the worst of them all? CHRIS BERMAN!!!
    Kevin Harlan
    Gus Johnson
    Joe Buck
    Eric Reid
    Ron Pitts
    Don Criqui
    Kenny Albert
    Len Casper (Chicago Cubs WGN)
    Mike Ingles (sp) Miami Heat
    Mike Patrick
Keith Jackson (last 2 years before he retired)
    Mike Breen

Then of course, if we want to complain about people in the booth, you have to mention:

    Joe Theismann
    Tony Kornheiser
    Tony Siragusa
    Lamar Thomas
    Steve Lyons
    Rex Hudler

Kornheiser's not a play by play guy, he's a color guy and I think he does a really good job at what he does.

  • DaBigHurtDaBigHurt Posts: 1,066 ✭✭
I didn't say Kornheiser was a play by play guy...that's why I put him in a seperate catergory.

I think Kornheiser is terrible. It's obvious that before this year, he just didn't watch NFL games on a regular basis. He used to brag on PTI how he'd be asleep before the MNF games even kick off.

His unfamiliarity with NFL broadcasts is quite evident. How many times has Kornheiser turned to Joe Theismann for clarification on rules? One that really left me shaking my head was when Tirico said "an elbow equals two feet" on the replay of a reception, and Kornheiser asked his boothmates, "an elbow equals two feet?" like it was the first time he had heard of the rule.

And how many times is he going to refer to his fantasy team during broadcasts? It's gotten to the point where even Tirico is sick of hearing it because he KNOWS the viewers sure as hell don't give a damn about Kornheisers fantasy team.

Have to agree that Gumble was terrible last night. Definitely not cut out for play by play. It was like two color commentators. During one touchdown, neither Gumble nor Collinsworth said anything for about 4 or 5 seconds.

Picture quality was mediocre, top line graphics were distracting and cut off view on some plays, and they must have had only 3 or 4 cameras there based on the angles. Plus the NFL network logo was blurry for about half of the game.

Not exactly starting with a bang.

joe buck, kevin harlan and mike patrick worse than bryant gumbel? no way. picking on keith jackson at the end of his career is a cheap shot.

Heh, I could care less if you thought I was taking a "cheap shot" for saying Keith Jackson was doing a horrible job of play by play the last 2-3 years of his career. The man hung around too long and his performance during the USC/Texas Rose Bowl was the low point of his career. There's a reason he retired immediately after the championship game.

There seems to be a great deal terrible announcers than good or even passable ones:

    Collinsworth - how about Collinsworthless?
Theismann - hey Joe, shut yer yap!
joe buck - a diva, Aikman must roll his eyes 20 times a game

I'd say these 3 constitute the lowest of the low currently on the air...I'm not counting the regional guys that no one has (or ever will) hear of.
  • Nobody confirmed the cost of the games, but if what I originally reported is true, and they show a lot of different games for the same price ($5.00 a month), then I'd come out WAY ahead moneywise. Going to the bar to watch a game or two is pretty expensive in the long run...

Everytime i hear Tim McCarver open his mouth, i want to put gun in mine. Best quote by Tm during the World Series a couple of years ago-----"you can't hit a home run with a swing like that---Enter Mr. Buck's voice----It's a deep drive to left field, and it's, GONE!!

And the other would be Bill Russell----"Some shooters are shooters, and some shooters are scorers" Huh???
" To be a great rebounder, you have to play the boards". Duh??

    hurt,
you could care less or you could not care less? why don't you tell us who you like in the booth? from your posts i know compliments are not your thing, confrontation usually is. share with me who lives up to your standards as a broadcaster. i bet you are a madden guy!

I'll be glad to name some of my favorites (in no particular order):

    Al Michaels
    Tom Hammond
    Vin Scully
    Jim Nantz
    Dick Enberg
    Dave O'Brien
    John Sciambi
    Skip Carey
    Don Simpson
    Bob Costas
    Vern Lundquist
    Marv Albert

    Color commentators:
Bill Walton - ONLY if he's accompanied by Steve Snapper Jones
    Phil Simms
Believe it or not, Dave Justice when he was briefly on ESPN
    Hubie Brown
    Dan Dierdorf
    Billy Packer
    Troy Aikman
Steve Young - they really should look into putting him into the booth because he brings PERSPECTIVE, something that's sorely missing from many broadcasts nowadays, especially on ESPN.
