VAM folks, hang on to your hats! (more photos)

Before this coin, PCGS had never graded an 1882-O/S VAM 4 EDS in Mint State, and only 5 examples period.
Before this coin, PCGS had never graded any 1882-O/S in either PL or DMPL.

"Cherry" may not quite be the right word for it.

He bought it at the Santa Clara show last week from someone who knew it was a DMPL O/S, so he didn't get it for a few hundred bucks. But he's doing OK.

I'll shoot more photos tomorrow, including the O/S detail.

John Roberts wrote a very good article in the November 27th Coinworld on the 1882-O/S Vam Varieties, page 54. He explains how the Vam 4 O/S EDS was discovered in 1975 and is the rarest and most valuable member of the O/S family. He also posted some good close-up pictures of the Vam 4 to show the distinctive patterns of the polishing lines. Check it out, it has some valuable information.

Here are shots of the mint mark and the interesting die gouges/heavy polishing lines inside, under and to the right of the ear. The presence of the lines to the right of the ear are the confirming diagnostic for VAM 4 EDS vs. VAM 3 EDS. (My apologies for the redness is the first photo; I shot these outside in shade next to a brick wall. I had no idea the color highlights from the bricks would be reflected in the coin's ultra-closeup details!)
