buyer whining about one terrible card

I sold a near set of 1985 Topps WWF cards and stickers on ebay.

auction

The buyer says that one card is terrible and not NM as I listed. I don't think the set had any sort of vgex dogs, but a couple might have been exmt.

If someone says the cards are nrmt, I don't assume that each and every card is going to be nrmt. Am I wrong here?

What does the group think?

I think you should give him a pro-rate $.19 refund.

He got 78 cards for $14.50 and he's whining about 1? That is 18.5 cents per card. That amount won't even get you 10 minutes in a parking meter.
Beyond the fact that I would tend to tolerate one or 2 in a lot that were below the average grade (unless it was the key card) it's 18 friggin' cents.
I always worried about stupid things like this, so when I sell a cheap lot of cards I advertise it as 60 cards and include 70, just to cover it. But if you've got a jacknut like this he wouldn't care.
If he paid by pay pal I'd credit him that amount. I'd definitely block him from any other auctions.

I think the fact that he collects WWF cards says it all image

Seriously though, he obviously is someone whose medication ran out a day or so before the cards arrived. Id make him return all the cards for a full refund. That way the 77 cards he was happy with are snatched back away from him and he can cry over having nothing now.

Sounds like a picky bottom-feeder to me. You probably can't win here.

I have tons of those cards in at least NM. If you want I can send him a replacement card... gregmo32@aol.com

Don't waste your time and fees listing on ebay before getting in touch me by PM or at gregmo32@aol.com !
  • maybe I should just not reply and take a negative on this one. I have been at 100%, but I don't think that being at 99.9% will hurt me much.

Why take a negative over a few cents. Paypal him his shipping and then block him.
  • I understand both sides but if you said the cards were nrmt and one was not, then you werent completely accurate. Since you were already missing one card, why not pull out the one thats not nrmt and list it that way? With cards, you might get someone who is looking for cards to grade or is buying the set for that one card. If I bought 65 cards to get one that I needed in nrmt and it was less than that, I'd be po'd too.

    Just my opinion.
  • Listing the condition of each and every card is best. However, that is time consuming, and I knew this set would not sell for over $25. I have seen people say something along the lines of " the set is nrmt overall, with some better and some worse." That seems to be about the same, but maybe that way they won't think each and every card is nrmt.

I sent the buyer $1. IF I get hit with a negative, then so be it.

    << <i>The cards are nm >>

I agree with Griffins - for that kind of money, it's hard to believe he's getting upset.

Now, I also agree with Softparade - some people are gonna hold you to your description.

I have seen sets in your situation where some may be nmmt, nmt and exmit - just stating - "set averages nm - ranging from nmmt - exmt" or something like that.

Instead of messing with paypal - why not just offer the guy something to make him happy?

And, if this doesn't work, go with your gut and what you feel is right.

    Good luck

  • well I gave him a $1 back, but it seems so minor to be upset about.

I don't want to be misleading folks, so I will start saying overall condition is nrmt, exmt. I have had some really mixed condition non-sport auctions before. For those I would say that the set is nrmt except for #1, 34, 44, etc. But those were real filers, ie G/VG.

    Ebay! It's always fun!

You did good by giving him a refund. Some things are not worth thinking twice about. Giving a refund is not a defeat in anyway. He held you to your descritpion and you made good on it. You won't get picky customers all the time. Besides it all balances with those customers that had to deal with a lot of messed up cards who did NOT complain.

Well, to be fair, I too was a rather picky collector in that sense when I first got back into the hobby and started buying sets. But once you start buying many, many sets you get an idea of what you can expect and learn to be more reasonable about things. And if there's one or two commons in a set that are not cutting the mustard, fine. I can always go to Bill Henderson or some other commons dealer and upgrade. Same goes whenever I have the heart to get 1970s sets again. Even if a set is indeed NRMT/MT in terms of sharp corners and clarity or whatnot, there's most likely going to be a few miscuts or "hairline borders" that need to be upgraded. At least it does give you some of the fun that a true set builder (the ones that build the sets one or a few cards at a time) has.

"decent transaction. made good effort to true-up on damaged card. thx."

    What do you mean?
That feedback tells me you take care of your customers.
    Good job!

And people say $1 won't buy anything anymore. Peace of mind perhaps?

That feedback would carry a lot more weight for me than "good transaction, thanks!". It says you can take care of a problem.
That type of feedback is worth 10 positives. And it only cost you a buck and 3 days of aggravation!
