Probably still Franklin, though there would likely be a strong push and political fight to replace him with Reagan.
  • The man who should be on there anyway, Ben Franklin!

I see no reason why it would have changed from Ben Franklin. After all, we still have Lincoln, Jefferson, Roosevelt and Washington.
I decided to change calling the bathroom the John and renamed it the Jim. I feel so much better saying I went to the Jim this morning.

You think Massachusetts will be any more inclined to remove Kennedy than Virginia was to remove Monticello?

IMO Kennedy will be on the half for decades to come, if the Mint is still making coins.

Give em hell Harry, my favorite president. It took a strong man to end WWII, many died, many U.S. service members saved, worthy of a place on half or a dollar.

This thread just reminds me of how politics have taken over our coinage, and the only fair way to take someone off is to take ALL of 'em off and leave 'em off, and if you want to recognize them, put 'em on a commem when a major anniversary arrives.

I believe putting Lady Liberty on the obverse and an eagle on the reverse would accomplish the goal.

  • I'd like to see another walking Liberty, similar to the Weissman design, maybe, but updated. Some incarnation of Liberty should be there, regardless. The days of presidents (or political figures in general) on coins should be over. It's well overdue.

I think there is a good chance Kennedy would still be on the half dollar today regardless.

If he had survived, he would be about 89 today - the demographics are against him so he probably would have died anyway by now. Since he was a very popular President, he could easily have still been in line to be on the half if he didn't fall out of favor.

And if you don't like my logic on that one, I think Reagan would have had a great shot at displacing Franklin as he was also a very popular President.

  • I imagine they would have tired of franklin and put a president (deceased) on the coin. Probably the most recently deceased (Reagan).

Thank God the Franklin WAS retired BEFORE clad coinage, and even worse........................spaghetti hair!!! As it is, we only know the Franklin as a well-struck, 90% silver piece.

  • Eisenhauer would have taken Franklin's place. There wouldn't have been a new dollar coin. I don't think there was a felt need for one in 1971. In fact, there may not have been SBAs or Sacs if Kennedy hadn't been assassinated.

Liberty would have been best, as a response to those who say Franklin should be on it.

To those who said it should die with Kennedy being the last design, I feel completely the opposite. We need a currency realignment, eliminating the cent and the second decimal place in the process. Issue the cent, nickel and the quarter in collector sets only and eliminate them from circulating coinage. The dime would be the lowest anchor and only a half dollar as another fractional dollar piece, but smaller, about the size of the current nickel. And of course, coin $1 and some higher denominations for real use, getting rid of a little paper.

That said, I think Franklin would still be on the half if Kennedy wasn't killed. After all, we still have FDR on the dime, Washington on the quarter, Lincoln on the cent, Jefferson on the nickel and no change of personalities (even that load of a president, Grant) on our paper currency. The only change I can think of was the dollar coin. Ike was dropped when the big format was.

And I wonder if they would have ruined the design by reengraving his hair like they did with Washington.

Toss in my hat for MLK as well, even though I hate dead people on coins, the fact we're going to have William H Harrison on a coin before Dr. King is almost scandalous.
