Boxing Cards

I have just started a website www.boxingcarddigest.com and would like to hear from people interested in the collection of boxing cards.
Obviously the website is in it's infancy at the moment, but hopefully it will grow rapidly !

I have joined this forum as I see there is some talk on vintage boxing cards, as well as other card sets that featured boxers.

Should be fun popping in every now and then !

As a collector just getting into boxing cards this sight seems great. I know nothing of the history of most boxing sets so this will really come in handy for me. Good work!

My daughter was diagnosed with type 1 diabetes at the age of 2 (2003). My son was diagnosed with Type 1 when he was 17 on December 31, 2009. We were stunned that another child of ours had been diagnosed. Please, if you don't have a favorite charity, consider giving to the JDRF (Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation)

  • No, it isn't you - the site is still under construction.

It's going to take a while to upload pics of the hundreds of card sets in my database image

I wish there was a current price guide for all the many issues out there. I believe many are underpriced. Do you know why there are so many 1971 Barret Ali (clay) cards? Why are there so many 1938 Churchman Boxing cards? I welcome your site.
  • Boxingcarddigest,

He he he image [rubbing my hands together in an excited motion]

I love the site, added it to my favorites and plan on checking in on a consistant basis. I recently began focusing my collection strictly on boxing cards (okay, the occasional golf card slips in there too image) so I'd like to preface my post by stating that I am NOT any kind of expert. But, I do have some boxing cards and might be able to help you with scans. I clicked on your 1920-1929 section and only saw one card so I could definitely offer you some scans of some cards that I've acquired along the way.

As I mentioned previously, I love the site and would be glad to do anything to help see it grow and flourish. Anything you need just shoot me a PM or an email (africh@aol.com). Keep up the good work! image

  • Xanadu,

    Thanks for the offer.

The reason there's very few cards shown is that I haven't got around to uploading the pics yet. I am still playing around with various ideas on how to display the cards the best. So far I have hundreds of sets (or sets containing boxers) in my database, and it's going to take some time image

    Spazzy,

The Churchman cards are a very common set and can be found just about anywhere in the world. There is also a few re-prints floating around, but most of the cards you'd see would be originals. I'm not sure why there are so many, maybe the company produced a heap of the cards (they were a major producer of all sorts and released many different sets of cigarette cards in that era).

If you were to buy a Churchman set, try to find the one's that come in their original collector's album. They are a little 6" album with 5 cards to a page. The cards are held in by slipping each corner of the card into the album (no glue - and the cards can be read from the rear). They're pretty cool and add something to an otherwise common set.

As for the Ali card, I really can't answer that one.

First I would like to welcome you BCD!

I just looked at your web.

Very cool and worth looking at.

I like the fact that you featured a boxer - this time Sullivan.

I don't collect boxing but do have the T9 set on the registry - only 2 strong - I bought them from an anitque dealer and they came back a respectable 5.

I know that Arthur has been showing his new acquisitions since he has joined - they're a great addition to the "mix" here.

So, please fill us in whenever you have the time.

This is a pleasant addition to the forum!
    Happy Thanksgiving

  • I liked the 1991 AW set. Boxing use to be so huge, too bad it's become a niche sport like horse racing.
Running an Ebay store sure takes a lot more time than a person would think!

After reading Adam Warshaw's definitive book on boxing cards I started working on 4 sets (T218, T220, T9 and '48 Leaf). I stumbled across your site the other day looking for a '48 Graziano and am looking forward to going thru it over the holiday.

Always looking for Topps Salesman Samples, pre '51 unopened packs, E90-2, E91a, N690 Kalamazoo Bats, and T204 Square Frame Ramly's

Kingraider, I couldn't agree more with you. I recently picked up a case of this from Steve Hart (just to get particular player cards for set registries) and I've been blown away by the quality of this set. Anyone who either now or has ever been a fan of the sport of boxing would absolutely love this set. The selection of boxers is outstanding. Anyone who's ever had their fingerprint on the sport of boxing at one time or another (no matter how briefly) is represented in this set.

I'm sure it's just like every other early-90s product in the sense that it was mass produced (I got the case for $65 image) and it's unfortunate that the cards do not carry any monetary value. The set has everyone from the Great John Sullivan to Buster Douglas. The photography is remarkable. Each photo is crystal clear and the colors -- when the photos aren't black & white -- are vibrant and jump of the card. The B/W photos are also sharp with no blurring or fuzzyness. The action shots are great and the pose shots are also admirable.

I just randomly grabbed a stack of what I've opened so far and here are some of the photos I'm talking about.

Has anyone caught the Meldrick Taylor/Chavez fight on ESPN's "Legendary Nights?" If not, do yourself a favor and hunt that down, they're ON DEMAND as well. Sidenote: that is a GREAT TV program. image

All in all, this set is a perfect example of one of those sets you put into a binder and flip through every once in a while. I plan on piecing together as many sets as I can out of the case and sending some cards in to PSA. This issue is a dream come true for true collectors -- dirt cheap, nice product and GREAT individual athlete selection. Highly underrated in my opinion. But, of course, as many of you know I think all boxing cards are underrated. image

Edited to add: Sorry for hijacking your thread BCD. I do love the site and will be frequenting it on a regular basis. image
  • Anyone see the M.Pacquiao/Morales fight last week?

boxing may not see the press it once did b/c the heavyweight division is such garbage now .... but the lighter weightclasses are in their HEYDEY right now .... Pacquiao is simply unbelievable to watch. He's amazing!

My favorite is the 1951 ringside set. It is still atainable and it has so much history. I have a complete set on the registry in ex condition. In my quest for nice cards, I found what I think was short prints for my area. I had trouble with about 10 cards in nice centered shape. Has anyone else had trouble finding some of these cards with out paying big bucks?
  • The Taylor/Chavez fight proved that Richard Steele has always been in someones back pocket........
  • I am also a "new collector" to boxing but have absolutely fallen in love with them. Can't help but want to own a James Bradock "Cindarella Man" or Jack Johnson card after watching the movie or documentary of either of these great champions. For anyone who has never seen a T9 Turkey red in person....you've never seen the best looking sports cards in the hobby IMHO. Great web site you started and I joined already and will be checking back often to watch it grow. Thanks for makeing the effort to promote a great "nitch" in collecting!

BCD, I played with a bunch of different ways to present the Will Clark cards on my website. I finally settled on a free photo album software calld JAlbum. I'd *highly* recommend it. It is free and has TONS of user created skins and improvements. Here's a link: JAlbum.

If you want to see how I use the program, check out my website, Thrill22.com

Good luck, and welcome to the boards.

    Sure did Tom.

Morales just plain got beat. But I give him credit - he kept punching even while taking some hard hits.

The final round was kind of sad - he had nothing left.
