    What is a "Commerative"? image

PS- could be worse. this guy can't make up his mind between "connerative" and "commerative". Wrong both times.

Yes I forgot the old lesson, never draft tired or angry.

In any case the gold coins are 100K and the silver coins are 500K. The question is: Are they only going to mint the amount already sold? Are these going to reappear like the 2005 proof sets some time next year? I have a hard time believing they sold 500k of the silver coins. So it may be a case of just limiting the amount minted.

Numismatic News 11/28 issue reports for the SF commems...

I guess you're referring to selling out due to Dec. 15 deadline?

Having sold only about half the mintages allowed, I'll bet they extend it!

(sent my damaged golds back, too -- hope to keep the silvers -- Should look nice next to the old Morgans!)

    (edited to fix chart)
  • December 15 deadline and they can't guarantee anything ordered after December 1. Is it a hard sell?

  • They are going to sell these coins in bulk to dealers starting December 1, 2006. That is why they cannot guarantee your order after the 1st. The coins are not selling well that is why they are doing the bulk program. Here is the Link for the previous thread.

I received my Silver Proof yesterday. It had a nose hair in the capsule so I gave it a quick rinse. image I gave the coin a good going over with much attention to the reverse and something suddenly dawned on me! The reverse, and I am looking objectively, looks like a cheap knock off from the Franklin Mint. This is just my opinion as I have seen PL examples of the Morgan Dollar and the letters are crisp and well defined. This new proof however does not have crisp well defined lettering on the reverse. The letters seem to blend into fields instead of stop at the fields. The frost was not that well done either.

I'll try to post photo's when I get home.

I'll keep the coin but I am not nearly as impressed as I thought I would be. Maybe its just a reflection of the Mints current MASS Production philosophy. I am hoping that the business strike looks better.
I decided to change calling the bathroom the John and renamed it the Jim. I feel so much better saying I went to the Jim this morning.

  • Received my SF Silver Proof today...

Fortunately, no problems with the coin. The obverse looks much better in hand than it does on the website. I agree that the motto on the reverse has unusual lettering, compared to even circulated Morgans; not quite the Old English lettering the true silver dollars have. On the other hand, I think of the reverse as an homage to a classic silver dollar and that it was not meant to be an exact reproduction. The eagle, for example, looks terrific to me.
  • I sent ALL of my SF gold proofs back 6 weeks ago and just sent back all the UNC SF gold today. Not a coin in the lot that would grade better than 68. Very disappointed in these gold coins!

The Mint, by LAW must stop selling these. SO, it's not a sell out, far from it, but it is you last chance.

about 140,000 proof and 60,000 unc. Silvers. Not sure if that includes 50,000 proofs for the legacy set. Max. mintage 500,000

I have the silver proof, I'm not impressed. I'm waiting for the Unc. I bought just for my collection.

I really like the classic eagle but sent my gold proofs back with a letter saying I'd accept a replacement only if they could assure me that the capsules wouldn't open. I got my 4 MSs yesterday and 3 of 4 were out of the capsules. I'm so disgusted. Before sending in my first coins for grading last year I never even attempted to remove a proof coin from it's holder except when I was a ten-year old fixated with getting closer than the plastic would allow!

Frankly, I'm suprised that so many there are PCGS grades are coming up 69s and even 70s . If I compare any of those I've seen to the ASE/AGEs I'm amazed they're getting obtaining even 66s and 67s. There are tiny shiny dots and pockmarks in the windows, on the pedement, in the filed, on the letters. They're nowhere near as clean as the 68 ASE's I received.

Oh, and not only did they extend the date, they've offered dealers who purchase 25 or more at a time discounts. So what we have are relatively lower quality coins that potentially have the largest mintage since the '94 World Cup Commemoratives.

    HAPPY COLLECTING!!!
