1851 $20 Baldwin - What do you know about them

I have a friend who's grandmother owned an antique shop in rural Oregon. The family has been here in Oregon since the mid 1800. He called me up to say that his father now has this coin and would like to know what it is. I have yet to see it in hand but was described as a $20 gold coin. It has "California Gold" and "Baldwin" in the Head band. It has SMV on the reverse and 13 stars. I can't find any information other that about the $10 version which is a fairly rare coin worth $15K or more.

Anyone know about the $20's? Are there conterfeits? If so are they common or even worth money? The provenance is plausible. Small town outside the state capital of Oregon (Statehood 1849), antique shop owner in the early century.

We need a good pic to help you. May be real but its probably a replica.

  • He is bringing the coin over on Wed eve. I should be able to tell pretty quick at that point. There is a 99.9% chance its a fake. There are, from what I can gather 3 known. So this would be worth a tidy sum, and there is no Santa Claus.

Sorry, What I meant to say there is no Santa Claus in coin collecting. If you want a new bike, Santa does great things. New MS67 Morgan, not so good.
  • probably bogus. If it was real then it would have already been discovered

You are probably right that it is fake, however the coin has been in the family for the last century. We will know tomorrow when they are bringing it over.
