New PS: 1913-S Type II Buffalo....Grade Opinions Welcome (better photos)

OneyOney Posts: 1,394 ✭✭✭✭
I bought this from a good friend and dealer Ron at the Nashua NH show this past weekend. I thought this coin is good one for my type collection. What are your thoughts on the grade? Thanks.....

    It's a proof! image

    I'll guess MS 64 -- nice coin whatever it's graded....Mike

AU50-55. There is rub everywhere; the hips and flank of the buffalo are seriously worn and approach running together. Nice coin, though, and a good find in this condition. Pricey, too!

I've found, incidentally, that graders are tougher on the '13-S Type 2 than any other coin in the series. I will never forget the following long-ago thread started by Russ, in which he showed off a friend's Type 2 I thought certain was mint state. The grade: AU58. That was an eye opener for me. Compare that coin to the one we're looking at here.

Amanda, if the AU50 you're looking at here causes you to gasp, what emotions does the linked-up AU58 evoke?

  • It looks AU at best. Looks like a lot of rub and hits in prime spots. Several rim nicks and a weak strike. That being said, its a very nice coin that I wish I owned. Am I missing something?
  • Okay I have thought about it. image

I'll say 53. It still shows some mint lustre and overall has a pleasing look to it. No overly detracting marks or anything of the sort.

Plus a really nice strike for the date! image

    Lovely buffalo. image

  • That rim nick near 12:00 was the first thing I noticed on looking at the coin. That alone is gonna cost you. It is a bit flat in some areas, so AU 53-55.

Here's my 13-S Type 2 in an NGC MS64 holder.
Compare the the lack of flatness high on the devices here, especially in the hip area, with the coin up top. Also compare the luster, it's fairly dramatic even allowing for the different types of photos.

Damn, Goose, that is one spectacular bit of coinage. Grade be hanged and heck with the little technical shortcomings, I just love that piece. The eye appeal is off the charts.

me too, then 9:00 and 10:00, though a slab ought to cover 'em up.
  • Usually, 1913-S type two Buffalo's don't make for good type set coins , because they are typically the weakest struck of all the 1913's , but I dont see anything wrong with this one. I think keys/semi-keys make for a more interesting album. You could have a beautiful MS-65 1938-D Buffalo in that slot and I would'nt even think twice about looking a second time at that coin cause they are so common, There is just something special about a key/semi key. I say the grade is AU-58.

    I'd say a pretty well struck AU-50.

The rim nick at the top (obv), the dings on the bisons front shoulder and the noticible hip rub keep it down. I would bet however, the coin in hand looks much better as the picture (scan) makes the coin look a little washed out.

    Nice Pick Up.
  • AU55. Very well struck! PCGS will probably give it 50 or 53, due to the ticks.

AU55. There is wear on the buffalo's hip.

    I really like the color.
