What do you do with your oddballs....and why did you buy them?

We all go outside of our normal area of collecting when we see a coin that we just can't pass up due to the condition or price.....etc

But what about the head scratchers in your collection......you know the coins and or slabs that just don't fit and really stand out from the rest of what you have amased......what do you do with them???

Please post some coins that just don't fit into your collection and please post some idea of things a collector could do with similar coins.

Here is an idea of what I am talking about:

NGC 1961 50C PF64 (no Cameo and a hint of pink spotted toning) not attractive in any way image
PCGS 1884-S $1 VF30 (low grade...looks like like it's been cleaned for sure but still got graded?)
PCI (Gold Label) 1953-S .10 MS67 toned but not really attractive to me

None of these have any real value and I guess I could just leave them in a box but when I started selling off my collection several months ago....it seemed hardly worth it to even part with these so.........what the heck do I do with them???

My entire collection is pretty much a hodgepodge. I started out with Morgan toners, acquired many and eventually sold many. I have about 8 now that I really love, and the rest of my collection is simply random type pieces. I go through phases, but luckily once I purchas a coin I dont have much regret and still enjoy it.

This was my first big purchase outside of morgans. I call it my "I want a nice bustie phase"

Then I hit an early copper phase...

    Then the AU gold phase...

I'm proud to say I haven't purchased a coin that wasn't part of my core focus in over 5 years. It's been tough, but focus has been a key to my collecting success. I have, however, purchased "core" coins that in hind-site were not as favorable to my collecting interests as they should be. I usually just trade these towards better coins or sell them to a dealer even if it means taking a small loss.

I collect primarily 1900 to 1950 uncirculated business strikes by type.

    I then bought this:

It lives with my other coins - sometimes with collecting as with life I do things (or buy things) on instinct that do not make sense to me at the time, but for which a for which a purpose comes into focus a little later on.

Artist that is an awesome piece. I would love to have that in my collection.

I agree with Shamika, focus is important. However the occassional random piece I think is important to keep one from going insane. Especially if their collection is only 1 short rare/expensive coin of completion.
