Heritage photos, and Ira & Larry Goldberg

In searching for auction house threads here, in one from 2004 several people mentioned that Heritage's photos were poor and not the best route for selling color coins. Has this changed or is it still valid?

Also, from the Goldbergs' website I see this-

'Our gorgeous, full-color catalogue is mailed to buyers and available online 3 weeks prior to each sale. Your consignments are marketed to collectors, dealers and investors worldwide via our catalogue, Ebay Live, Icollector, and our website.
Additionally, coin sale highlights are showcased in national and international publications and our emailed newsletter."

I noticed that coin conventions and floor auctions aren't mentioned. Are their auctions online only?

My opinion remains that Heritage sucks at photography

I like the folks at Heritage, so I will be nice and call their photos "erratic". There is no question that Heritage coins, via the internet and in-person, get seen by the most number of eyeballs.

Goldberg's auctions are indeed floor auctions, often held prior to large coin shows.

Jeremy is correct.... Heritage doesn't have a clue how to photograph toned coins.

However, if I had a toned coin I wanted to sell at auction I wouldn't send it ot Goldbergs, but rather Stacks/ANR -- if the quality of a photograph was that much of a concern.

That being said, one has to wonder just how much a picture matters in the larger auctions with the number of people viewing the lots in-person....Mike

What do you think of their photos of copper? Like this one:

Although in general their pics of copper are just as poor as the rest of their photos....the above photo is pretty damn good, but it would be nice if they removed the eyelashes first. image

The copper photos are very poor -whilst i find the photos of silver coins to be very good. But compared to other sites, heritage is a lot better than most. Superior is lousy.Lawrence is not great either. JMHO. Bob

  • RYK, do their floor auctions take place in whichever city the convention is in? Thanks.

Generally, the Goldbergs auctions are held in Beverly Hills at the Crowne Plaza the weekend just before the three Long Beach shows. They deliver lots to Long Beach.
  • Superior has very nice photos in their catalogues. I get excited every time one of them arrives in my mailbox. image

Goldberg's (and Superior's) catalogs are "gorgeous, full-colr catalogue[s]." The thing is, the pictures are lit straight-on and do not give you a good feel for how the coin looks. If it's colorful, you get to see it all, but if it merely has eye-popping luster that goes all the way down the rabbit hole, you'd never know. The straight-on lighting also hides some imperfections.
  • I bought one from Superior last Friday. Their color coins look great (from pics on their site) but I noticed many times that the holder picture looked less appealing than the straight on view that somehow captures all the colors.

Are you talking about photos on the website or photos in the catalogue's?
