My hi relief AU that is in an XF holder even though it exhibits EVERY criterion for an AU in the grading book actually PUBLISHED by PCGS (and therefore "gospel") and has been ridiculed by all is the FLAT EDGE. My PCGS pop report shows NONE in (ha ha) XF. How many are shown in a NEW pop report that I'm too cheap to pay for?

Thank you ever so much for your consideration and thoughtful answer to my hideously composed question.

    I remain.

For those of us who don't collect Saints on a serious level, but have wives who love them as big 'ol pieces of gold, what grade should we be looking at for the occasional "Here honey, look what I got for you at the show" gifts? Is it better to go with circ. grades because they're the cheapest way to get your foot in the door, or MS63 because they're at least a combination of better grade and some numismatic desirability, or something else?

    What say ye?
    When in doubt, don't.

Did the US Mints release of AGE's increase the interest in the series?

Do you anticipate any "new high grade hoards of Saints" will be found or recovered in the next 10 years?

    Why the attraction?

That stems from when I was a kid. I had all the Whitman books and was very active driving my local bank crazy working a $20 bill into rolls 3 times in a day. I knew the Red Book inside and out, yet when I came to the "St. Gaudens" $20 I thought, what a strange name, what an amazing looking coin, and WHAT prices!! I never saw one for many years and fell in love immedistely.

I owned 49 at one point....and was tapped out. The remaining coins in MS64 were a minimum of $150K and up, each, so that was it. Instead I decided that I'd first get a little liquidity so I sold my common dates. Then I had the opportunity to buy a few MONSTER coins and I decided that parting with medium rarities would be a good way to get the big guns I saw. I will have 18 coins after the FUN sale. All spectacular GEMS. I'm selling some great stuff **plug**. My 1924-D, 1925-D/S MS64's, 1926-S MS64, an unbelievable 1913 M64 that was so nice I bought it even though I have a MS65. So the number is 19 yet they are worth more that the 49 were.

Look for the White Sox next year.image

When are you going to have a saint giveaway?
It is not exactly cheating, I prefer to consider it creative problem solving!!!

  • Did I do ok at $40 over spot on this one? I like it, but wanna hear it from the man.

    First Saint
  • I'd like to buy one Saint and my price range is 5-14K. What date and grade would you recommend and also which dealer(s)?
  • saintgurusaintguru Posts: 7,727 ✭✭✭
topstuff...I see 3 in XF. Still a very nice coin!

dennis...definately an MS coin is my preference. If money wasn't a major issue I'd say a generic MS65...but a nice 63 would be nice also. If you want a "pocket piece" (which I would never carry in my pocket) then just find a raw circulated coin. They feel amazing in hand!

richard...I hope the AGE's make people desire the "real thing"...I can't say. As for any hoardes...I think 99% of them are cashed in. The Europeans are much more numismatically aware than we are and they sold many of the remaining coins in the 90's. If you look back, you'll see that the last gold liquidation just prior to the gold market bottoming out was by France, GB and Switzerland! That was probably the "last gasp". Amazing how the biggest gold-hounds always put the bottom in the market. image I don't think there are any rare dates anywhere. Even when mini-hoardes of good dates did break in the 60's-80's they were never more than a hundred or so coins...often MUCH less, and most were MS63 and lower.

Your avatar is kind of wussy-ish. image

Marty...where WERE you? I gave away a GEM Saint like 3 months ago. CoinMickey won!

That's some range! I'd get maximm exposure because I believe that the better the coin, the more resilient it will be to market fluctuations.

I love the 1913 in MS64 (~$7500-9500 depending on quality)...IF you can find a nice on.(I will not repeat that I know of one that's coming up. image ) They are overstated in the POP's by as much as 2x and are a tough date. The 1909 (~7500-9000) and 1909-D (~11,500-13,500) MS64 are also very desireable dates. Again...there are OK coins and nice coins in 64 holders. I am quoting the range for average to PQ coins.

I would suggest you look at the upcoming FUN sale. There is an amazing selection of stuff, and either see them yourself or have a dealer look at them for you. I love working with Todd Imhoff at Heritage...Mike Printz has a great eye...ReverendFeldilini can be a putz but he knows good coins. image That's the rout I'd go. Inventory coins are crapola lately!

Newb...$40 over spot is an excellent price! Looking at the pic is a pot shot, but if it's not rubby or "processed" it looks like a MS63 to me. Either way that's cheap. Nice grab.

If you want to bump your post count, why are you responding to multiple questions with one post? Do you think there are any Wells Fargo coins graded correctly?
  • Thanks Saintguru.

I never was a cheet poster...

Yeah...I think a lot of the Wells Fargo coins were graded correctly. There are so many of them! I also have seen many that are over-grade...and for the life of me I do not see how the re-tooled 1908 dies could produce near as many MS67/68/69 coins! They are flat and rather lifeless, in my opinion. Charles Barber was a dick!

When it was all 49 coins...~$2000 for a MS66 common.

With what I have now? $14.6K for my 1915 that's worth $30K now. image

LOL you and Russ are on a roll lately.

Since it's "Ask Jay" hour, I've always wondered if you affliction for St. Gaudens extended outside of coins. For instance, are you interested in or own any of his artwork, sketches, stamps, postcards, statues, medals, etc.

Just a few more to go!

    B) No. I am a huge admirer of Teddy Roosevelt, though. I truly believe that he did more positive and pro-active things for the people and nation than any other President.

    1. What did you say/do when Akers told you that your Saints were dogs?

    2. Did your wife ever stop beating you (for buying all those Saints)?

    3. Do you really think that Legend/Laura, who sells Saints--to keep this on-topic, has been less obnoxious and insolent than I have been in this thread?
