Soriano to the Cubs

Alfonso Soriano signs on with the Cubbies--8 years 136 million.

Cubs are doing a lot of buying this offseason...
Next MONTH? So he's saying that if he wins, the best-case scenario is that he'll be paying for it two weeks after the auction ends?

Forget blocking him; find out where he lives and go punch him in the nuts. --WalterSobchak 9/12/12

They're going to need at least 1 or 2 more reliable starters before I'll consider them legitimate contenders. Prior won't hold up all year, Wood is nothing more than a middle reliever and beyond Zambrano, it's a very suspect starting pitching staff.

    Overpaid? Maybe
    Need ALOT more pitching? sure

All that aside Soriano will wreak havoc in Wrigley image

Cubs are in for alot of 17-13 games at Wrigley this year. Maybe they can coax Kingman out of retirement and sign him to play only home games.

That contract sounds about right for PEAK value. Too much to pay per year for eight years, the latter part of which he'll likely be in decline.

No point in the Cubs getting pitching. With their history they'll just be injured.

Great. Not only is he setting the bench mark for other free-agents but that signing made the NL Central that much stronger.

    Dang!

In todays market I dont believe they overpaid at all, 40 Hr's 35-40 Sb's is almost automatic with this kid

With JD Drew getting $12mm per year, the money is flowing freely this off-season.

The cubs need to sign pitching and not even think of relying on wood or prior.

They've made that mistake the last few years, and its burned them. Have a rotation set without prior or wood, and, if they are able to perform, bonus, if not, then you're still ok.

8 years is a long term commitment to make to someone who has had motivational issues in the past - let's hope this doesn't burn the Cubs...I'd like to see someone challenge the Cards for that division.

Did some moran just say that a 40/40 guy was overpaid?? LMAO....back to the NFL

  • I'd like to bring up the fact that his OBP was a career high .351 last year (which is very ordinary). But I might get lambasted for it. Oops , I guess I brought it up. In my opinion, the Cubs overpaid, but I guess they did what they had to do to get him.

Is Soriano a power hitter or an on base guy?? Which is it? Yeah he hits lead off, but he mashes it like Arod. Who would you rather have as a lead off hitter, a guy who gets on base, or a guy who jogs around the bases?

Wow, $17 mill a year, without defense. Vlad can get $20+ mill now when his contract is up.

Carlos Lee is going to want a comparable contract.

hey coin boy...stick to something you know something about like foot.....urrrr......wheat cents! Soriano led everyone in the outfield in
assists in 06......man, you are amazing, you can look like a total *** at will. Congrats!

He led everyone in assists in the outfield cuz runners would run on him. Guys that are proven out there do not get run on as much. Not a good stat to argue about a guys fielding in the OF. With that said, I would think that next year if he continues to play in the outfield batters will not be running on him like they did this year.

    Good for you.

Runners (base coaches) run on Manny Ramirez all the time too because he is proven in the outfield. Manny consistenty throws out more than the average outfielder. Of course, throwing from a left field position that is only 200 feet away certainly helps.

Not sure exactly what you mean barn. my point was that soriano had many more chances then the average outfielder and thus was able to get more assists.

BFD, you know damn well Alf sucks in the outfield. In trying to make an a$$ out of me, you only make a bigger a$$ out of yourself, comrade cardboard collector.

BTW, Manny led the AL (or was among the leaders) in outfield assists, yet you don't see me touting him as a gold-glover.
  • A lot of people talking about the Cubs overpaying. I have a question. Who cares what they pay for a player? Who cares what any team pays for a player for that matter?

The teams are going to charge sky high prices whether or not they sign a player or not. I'd rather them spend it to be at least somewhat competitive then having my money pad their coffers. Now, if they could spend $$$ on pitching.

In my case, Soriano or not, I bet Cubs ticket prices were set for another record increase next year.
