Okay, all of you know that the upcoming 2007 baseball season will make the 60th anniversary of Jackie Robinson breaking MLB's color barrier, opening the way for other black MLB players to enter and integrate MLB. That being said, what about the gender barrier? I just find it hard to believe that we've had girls play in Little League for at least 25-30 years, yet no woman has (to the best of my knowledge) even come close to reaching the major leagues? I mean, you now have women drivers in NASCAR, several WNBA players who probably could play well in the NBA also, and I believe there have been a few women kickers/punters in college football. So where are the women professional (remember, minor leagues are professional also) baseball players? Any out there today you believe have a good shot at making the majors?

The first guy who would even suggest it will be looked at as a fool.

Recall the french golfer who attempted to play with the women. He made himself look even worse than when he choked and blew the British open.

You can wait another 100 years, there will never be a woman in the major leagues. Im not being sexist, it is just a fact. Absolutely no way they would be able to compete at any position.

  • It could happen one day. A knuckleball pitcher perhaps, but short of that it's very doubtful. Too much speed and power to contend with that women simply can't match.

One thing I've noticed is that in the high school and college levels, there are typically softball teams meant for girls; I wonder if that's probably the reason you don't see women in the major leagues because after Little League, they don't really get a chance to play baseball on a true organized level. Not that there's anything wrong with softball mind you, but it is a very different (even though it looks similar) game than baseball, and is simply not a good way for a persepective major league dreamer to prepare to go to the major leagues. Does anybody know if there are any female baseball players in high school and college? There has to be if there's a few female kickers/punters in high school/college football...

I don't know about the rest of the congregation, but I think it would be sweet to see women in the major leagues, and I'm still shocked that it's not happened yet.

There is no gender barrier except for talent.

<<< several WNBA players who probably could play well in the NBA also >>>

    That's funny!

Actually, wasn't there a woman shortstop who was signed to a major league contract (she never got to play) and then afterwards women were offically (not just a "gentleman's agreement" like the race barrier) banned from the Major Leagues? Surely that's not still on the books today...

There is no way this will ever happen. I wouldn't mind seeing Jenny Finch from the US softball team more though.

    I'd hit it.

And the one on the left has some serious potential.

Ann Meyers, tried out for the Pacers back in 1976 or 77, was more or less a publicity stunt. But if memory serves me, she was way, way out of her league and she was the best female hoopster, at that time.

I wouldn't rule out the possibility of a female junkball pitcher some year, but I can't see beyond that.
