Speaking of AUs... (PICS)

On the heels of my post about AUs and their virtues and foibles, I've been gambling on a few on the Bay.

These are all auction pics; I've not received these yet. They're all over the map, some with more potential than others.
  1. Newfoundland 5c, 1919c, NCS AU Details, Cleaned. I knew full well this was a problem coin, but it is a TOUGH date in anything better than XF. This is one of those that takes a hellacious jump from XF (C$150) to AU50 (C$600) to MS60 (C$1,500).

  2. Canada 10c, 1921, PCGS AU58. About what I would expect from an AU58. Fairly sterile from a color standpoint.

  3. Saxony 2M, 1904E, ANACS AU55. Auction pics suck, so this is more of a gamble than some of the others, but the obverse pic looks like it has potential from a lustre and color perspective. Can't tell much about the reverse at all.

  4. Canada 5c, 1905, PCGS AU58. Same seller as the other PCGS AU58 above. This one has a bit more character to it, a seemingly nice bit of pale toning.

  5. Canada 10c, 1932, ANACS AU55. I'm REALLY looking forward to this one. No one else bid on the piece, so either I got a really good deal or I really screwed up. image

The first 2 pictures of the slab don't paint the coin in the most flattering light:

But then the closeups of the coin in different lighting tell a slightly different story. I love the color!

nice group! i really like the Saxony too, i think you may be pleasantly surprised on that one. BTW, thanks for the 3 Vatican coins i got from you recently, they are pretty cool!

this is one i like, in an old NGC holder (which could mean it would have a shot at 67, if someone cared to try). The pic is hazy, so it would be a gamble as to how the actual color is in person.

Actually, by buying a cleaned coin, you probably got a lot more bang for your buck.

What gave you that idea? image

I don't collect Canadian pieces seriously, but when I see nice pieces or pieces at bargain prices I pick them up. Since most upper mid-grade pieces (XF through MS60) can be found discounted compared to Krause (let alone Charlton or Trends), given their mintages they are a bargain compared to U.S. pieces.

This is especially true of Maritime Provinces coinage, IMO.

Got all the Canadians in. That 1932 10c is as gorgeous as the 2nd set of pictures imply (I'm guessing the first set was just thrown on the scanner to show the slab label). It's not all that much from a technical grade standpoint, but the eye appeal is just stunning. One of my nicest pickups this year.
