I Purchased a case of Topps Sterling and will post a box a day. I been excited about this product from the first day I heard about it, I even purchased a Topps Sterling booklet to hold me over till they finally come out. I picked up a Topps Triple case from http://www.shortporch.com/ and was very happy with the results, mojo was a Pujols Bonds Arod triple auto relic. I Figured I had to use them again for the Topps Sterling, Man Am I glad. I preordered this at $2500 a case. Jeff Tucker at Short Porch Thank You.

Thanks, Mike

I never understood why Topps or any other card company would hack up photos, Perez Steele or any other image to put in a sig card IMO, I think it looks awful. They should stick with index cards or album pages and matte those. Especially if they charge a arm and a leg for the product. P.
  • DO you know the names of the players when you open the case, or are they still in ANOTHER box? Just curious, seems like you made out on that one!

Those are nice cards, indeed - and thanks for sharing the scans Mike.

But, I have to agree with an earlier comment. That Mantle signature card is the definition of ugly. Especially since it looks like a cut out portion of another card (or photo, whatever). Not that it matters, I'm sure some crazy person will shell out big bucks for it on Ebay.

You all don't understand the business of modern cards. People are paying 300 bucks for one shot at these cards...multiply that
thuosands of times, and suddenly you understand why things get hacked up...and of course what the card looks like has nothing
to do with it...its not like you can say..sorry topps I dont like the way this looks, can I have my money back??

Congrats to topps..Mantle cuts used to me rare, now they arn't

    Kevin
  • Congrats on your opening day of opening =) Mickey Mantle is a great start. Good luck to you and thanks for sharing.

I collect very limited areas of modern football, mostly vintage, but I cannot understand why anyone would collect or really care about a card of Mickey Mantle from the current year, I mean he played decades ago. I understand the lore of Mantle, but having whole runs of Mantle cards in new sets has zero appeal at all to me. Plus all of those hacked up cards and plaques really look cheap and silly to me.
  • Stone193Stone193 Posts: 24,426 ✭✭✭✭✭
    Wow...

I agree that a hacked pic with a cut isn't the most esthetic thing...

but having said that - it's still a great pull!!!!!!!

Mike - do you plan to put the card up on ebay? Should get you some nice bucks.

I agree with Kevin - not as rare as before but still - a guaranteed Mantle auto card from Topps is one of the nicest things you can pull.

    Congratulations!

good point....but the cut auto is pretty cool, even if it is ugly....that may only decrease its value a little bit, but still, the MICK IS THE MICK!
  • I think it would have been a cooler idea to have left the auto'd cards/plaques/etc. WHOLE and include a redemption card in the packs. Topps could have framed/matted the autos .... or had them PSA/DNA'd .... or just raw .... but WHOLE ..... you pull the redemption for a Mantle auto and you're stoked .... you send it in and get a great, presentable auto you're thrilled to showcase as part of your collection.

To me that is a MUCH better than getting a cut up piece of card inside of another card.

I am still so confused by this product. It's obvious that Topps is just doing what they can to make coin, but how do those cut cards appeal to anyone?

I agree 100% with the redemptions, but there hasnt been one card company yet that has been able to handle it effectively. I just found two copies of redemptions I sent in to Topps Archives that I still havent received from 2001! I wish one of the companies could staff themselves properly to be able to handle a high end product with high end redemptions...
  • The primary problem with redemptions is the companies insert the redemption card because they have not yet obtained the player's signature. If the company would simply stick with in-hand stuff then there shouldn't be significant shipping delays. Most new auto cards have sticker autos as one step away from redemptions. Turns out the companies would send players a pile of cards to sign and many would get bent out of shape so they company had to insert a redemption and wait on the player or just cut the print run.
"One you start thinking you're the best then you might as well quit because you wont get any better" - Dale Earnhardt
  • Maybe an ugly card to some, but I have a $4000 offer for it.

Had to expect a big let down after box one. But I'm pleased to get a Cal Ripken Box a special number card of Ripken 4 piece card 01/10 and the Mystery pack found a Hall of Fame cut autograph of Ray Dandridge. He was before my time so here's some interesting info on Hooks.

    Thanks, Mike

    Ray Dandridge
    Nickname(s): Hooks
    Born: 1913

3B-2B-SS Negro Leagues 1933-49 Detroit Stars, Newark Dodgers, Newark Eagles, New York Cubans

    * Hall Of Fame in 1987

Ray Dandridge was a masterful third baseman, a stylist who could make all the plays. He was smooth and relaxed, with soft hands, a strong arm, and the versatility to excel at any infield position. "People would pay their way in to the game just to see him field," claimed Monte Irvin. Roy Campanella said, "I never saw anyone better as a fielder." Hoyt Wilhelm, who played against Dandridge in Cuba and with him in Minneapolis (American Association), asserted, "No matter how the ball was hit, he always made the throw so that he just did get the man at first." Others observed that a train could go through Dandridge's bowlegs, but that a baseball never did.

Dandridge started his pro career with the 1933 Detroit Stars and moved to the Negro National League's Newark Eagles, for whom he starred throughout the remainder of the 1930s. A spray hitter with good bat control, he seldom struck out, and skillfully executed the hit-and-run. In 1935, he hit .368. Looking for more money in 1939, he opted to play in Latin America. He went to Mexico in 1940, and spent most of the decade there. When he came back for a year in Newark in 1944, he batted .370, leading the NNL in hits, runs, and total bases. In 1945 he set a Mexican League record for hitting safely in the most consecutive games and managed his team to a pennant. In nine Mexican League seasons, he compiled a .343 average. Following the 1948 season, he returned to the States as player-manager of the New York Cubans.

During his time in the NNL, Dandridge registered a lifetime .355 average, and played in three East-West all-star games, hitting .545. He played winter ball in Mexico, Venezuela, Puerto Rico, and Cuba; in 11 seasons of Cuban Winter League action, he batted .282.

Soon after Jackie Robinson signed with the Brooklyn Dodgers, Bill Veeck contacted Dandridge about playing with the Cleveland Indians, but Dandridge refused to leave Mexico without a bonus. Later, in 1949, at age thirty-five, he was signed by the New York Giants and assigned to their Triple-A farm club at Minneapolis. He batted .363 his first year there, and won the league's MVP award in 1950, when he led Minneapolis to the league championship. Despite his achievements, the Giants would not promote him to the parent club.

While at Minneapolis, Dandridge provided advice and assistance to a young Willie Mays, who never forgot the help or the man. Returning to Cooperstown for Dandridge's induction into the Hall of Fame (he was elected by the Committee on Baseball Veterans in 1987), Mays stated, "Ray Dandridge helped me tremendously when I came through Minneapolis. Sometimes you just can't overlook those things. Ray was a part of me when I was coming along."

» July 26, 1987: Catfish Hunter, Billy Williams, and Ray Dandridge are inducted into the baseball Hall of Fame in Cooperstown, New York.

Did Ripken sign that card in white Sharpie or is it not supposed to be autographed?

At the top of the card it shows "Topps Certified Autograph", but it isn't.

After seeing the Mantle/Gibson, I wonder if Topps didn't job you on that one.

Only an idiot would have a message board signature.
  • Like EAsports noticed, Yesterday Ripken 4 Game Piece says it's a Topps Certified Autograph, so yesterday pulls may turnout to be even sweeter.
Box 3 is a Clemente box No autos today but with the hit card, I'm very pleased, a four piece beauty. The Mystery card is a suede Ripken 30/50.

    Thanks Mike

Also besure to get in on the NPN, Info is here, good luck.

lot of $$ for these types of product--but I too love to rip 'em. Still working on my case of '06 SP Legendary Cuts
  • Another pleasant box and I know a Special Brett fan that gets first crack at these out of the George Brett box. Very happy to report we pulled another auto a Sweet 5 piece George Brett. But was a little disappointed with the surprise pack, it was the same suede #95 Ripken 02/50, we pulled yesterday.

    Thanks, Mike

  • Stone193, Thanks, Yes I'm enjoying this case.

    Box 5
Have to say at the halfway mark this nolan ryan box is the worst so far. No auto in box five, but a very nice 4 piece Ryan, and all appears to be the same color. And guess what the Surprise pack is, yeap you right another Ripken, but at least this one is a differant card #85.

    Thanks, Mike

  • I was looking at some of the other case busts of this product over on the Beckett boards and noticed the same thing ----- where 3-4 of the boxes would have the same Suede card of a player in subsequent boxes. It's as though the collation wasn't done very well.

    That really sucks!

  • My immediate guess on the Ozzie blue would be the uniforms from about 82-84 .... which were a sort of baby blue shade in color, top to bottom.

Yes, as you can imagine, they were hideous.

Another Yankee for the collection, we have a Yogi Berra box. No autos today, but did get a sticker card. I check out the back of the cards when I first open to see if it has a Topps auto sticker on it. This one has a triangle sticker which states a 1/1. Was very happy to pull a 1/1 five piece Yogi card with Jersey, uniform and glove on it. Mystery card same #95 Ripken but this one works in my collection being the first 01/50. One more to break,

    Box 10:
We have a Mike Schmidt Box. Mystery pack the same #95 Ripken. But very happy with the Schmidt Auto 3 pieces card. Does anyone have any guess as to what the piece is under the number 1. it has some green on it?

This was a bunch of fun to open. From start to finish 06 Topps Sterling has delivered. Best pull easily the Mantle cut auto 3 relic. The worst I'll go with Ryan 4 pieces only cause they all appear to be the same color. My only complaint with this product is the mystery packs yielding the same player in seven of the packs and six of them being the same card. Overall is it the product of the year? It very well could be.

I like the Schmidt auto Mike.

    If there's 4 cards to cover the 4 HR's...

    And your's is 9/10...

that would mean there must be a total of 40 auto cards?

Are you gonna put this up on ebay? I would be interested to see what this brings?

Plus have you decided what to do with the Mantle auto?

If you put it up - let us know - I would like to watch the sale of the Mantle.
